Funny thing is, take away the "y'all" and the southern inflection, and she pretty much talks the way I talk. |

From Connecticut, by the way. |

As do I OP, as do I.
I'm not fond of people rendering accents through writing. Most of the time it's done in a way that disturbs the mood of the piece, makes it more difficult to understand what they're saying, and doesn't give me in an impression of their accent. |

You're a silly user. Who is? You is, HeinousActs. |

I was going to read the "Discorded" part of Pony POV but this turned me off:
Ah didn't evah lied before. Ain't now. Ain't evah! Okay, so Ah reckin' Ah was sometimes dead wrong 'bout some thangs. Maybe Ah couldn't buck dah entire orchard by mahself. Maybe helpin' with ah tricky stunt, bakin', and herdin' bunnies what ain't dat bright when Ah was half-asleep. So Ah didn't tell Pinkie Pie 'bout her surprise birthday. But Ah didn't tell her nothin' that ain't true! .. I swear, they don't even write like that in Southern-based books. |

That's because AJ's accent isn't southern, it's western. Anyone who's actually from the south would know this. I'm from the south, AJ's accent is not southern, not even close. |

She's not something out of Hee Haw or Wonder Showzen's Mathematics episode |

It doesn't work well for western stuff either. |

What about just dialect as distinct from, OP?
I'm in two minds. Fiction should convey the uniqueness and idiosyncrasies of a character's speech somehow because it's a part of them. However I completely understand irritation at posters Doing Accents: Pip's bothers me in print, partly because it's a bit odd-sounding, and outright weird when written unless his background is as a Dickensian chimney sweep or something. |

* ... as distinct from accent ...
Curiously, Nicole Oliver's Celestia can sound ambiguously Dorsetly-West Country to my ears at times, very subtly :/ |

I think the real problem is that the most authors oversaturate dialogue with accents. Describing a character's accent outside of dialogue, or having only one or two specific words reflect the accent in dialogue is sufficient. "Y'all" is really the only word (or rather words) that is needed to tell the reader that the character speaking has a southern/western accent. That said, it's not wise to stuff "Y'all" into every sentence, because that interrupts the flow as badly as oversaturated dialogue does. |

As an aspiring fic writer I think I must ask:
Where is the line between portrating her accent and being annoying? |
| Shockblock99 #839046 6 months ago |
^ When I write her voice, I just write what she'd say, with the occasional country saying.
Mite - little Mighty - very Y'all - you all Ya - you any word ending in (ing) - ends in (in') And other appropriate replacements. There are more complex and intricate changes, but those are on a case by case basis. |

Mite - little Mighty, Powerful - very Y'all - you all Ya - you any word ending in (ing) - ends in (in') And other appropriate replacements. There are more complex and intricate changes, but those are on a case by case basis. Always have an editor double check for errors and flow. "Twilight, I don't think this is a good idea. Snakes can be very dangerous when provoked." - "Well, Twi, I think you should get back to thinkin'. Snakes can raise a right dangerous ruckus when ya rouse 'em." |

Changing the way a word is spelled just to make it sound different is annoying. The proper use of Y'all and the like is just fine. Please no more 'Ah' for 'I'. |
| marioandsonic #839325 6 months ago |
I agree.
A little bit of an accent is okay, but like someone above posted: "Ah didn't evah lied before. Ain't now. Ain't evah! Okay, so Ah reckin' Ah was sometimes dead wrong 'bout some thangs. Maybe Ah couldn't buck dah entire orchard by mahself. Maybe helpin' with ah tricky stunt, bakin', and herdin' bunnies what ain't dat bright when Ah was half-asleep. So Ah didn't tell Pinkie Pie 'bout her surprise birthday. But Ah didn't tell her nothin' that ain't true!" That's just overkill. |

This is so annoying!
Also it's annoying when Twist's lisp is included like this... |
