fanon-wise nothing is set in stone and most likely never will be. therefore its all just a matter of personal preference, like or dislike one way or the other it doesn't really matter because at the end of the day we dont know what is what until it is proven otherwise |

@NecromanseR_RuS: Not everyone does. I love the idea myself, but I know better than to think it's in any way canon. As much as I love fanart and comics that show Derpy with Dinky (and/or Dr. Whooves and Sparkler), I'm still able to enjoy works that show her as an unattached pony. |

I'm still sticking with the idea that Sparkler is part of Ponyville's "Big Brothers, Big Sisters" program and Dinky was her little sister (not blood related). She looks after Dinky after school while Derpy is still at work.
Sparkler has her own little sister (blood related), seen having a picnic with her in "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" but she lives in another city with her parents so she doesn't get to see her too often. |

Dinky is Derpy's daughter. Sparkler is just a friend who competed in the Sisterhooves Social regularly with her own bigger sister when she was little.
Sparkler's sister moved away, and Sparkler was no longer able to compete in the Social, which made her sad. Dinky, at this time, wanted to compete with Derpy, but couldn't, as they were mother/daughter and not siblings. However, they made an agreement with Sparkler that made them all happy - Dinky had a big sister for a day (a bit like how "Applejack" and Sweetie Belle raced), and Sparkler was able to compete one last time. |

Dinky and sparkler are sisters who were orphaned when dinky was just a foal.
Derpy adopted the pair and so dinky see's derpy as her mother more than sparkler who is just thankful for what she did for them. Sparkler is now old enough to go to canterlot to study, but she visits her sister often and spends time with Derpy too, who she thinks of as more of an aunt. |

I reject your fanon and substitute my own. Here is my take. Sparkler was simply a sit in for Dinky's "sister" Much like AJ was for Sweetie. Never was a fan of sparkler being part of the family. It just needlessly complicates things.

Dinky is an adopted daughter. Sparkler is her sister by blood, but their parents are out of the picture, and she didn't find out about her until later. Sparkler started searching for her when she turned older with the intent of bringing her back, since she was her only remaining relative (that she cared about). But then she found out she was living with Derpy and that she was happy, and didn't have the heart to barge in. Derpy, finding out about it, in her simple minded way, suggested that she should become her daughter, as well. In reality, Sparkler is nearly a year older than her "mother". Sparkler went with it, and they have lived happily since. |
