Ever seen that episode "Look Before you Sleep?" I just re-watched that and Twilight mentions she's home alone because Spike is on a royal business trip to Canterlot and won't be back till whenever. So that means he's not just Ponyville's assistant librarian but he also has responsibilities in Canterlot, whatever they may be.
Spike's not a child. Maybe a baby dragon because they live for thousands of years but not mentally a child. He's never been portrayed as childish on the show and is even more mature than Pinky Pie and Rainbow Dash. |

Meh, I prefer Spike/Applebloom anyway. (I also like Rarity/Applejack and Fluttershy/Big Mac, but that's beside the point) |

^^ Spike's been portrayed as childish many times. Off the top of my head, his little giggle-run when he got his own Gala ticket and the way he couldn't stay still when he got his gift from the Cakes.
I agree he's not a baby as we understand it, but he's not an adult yet either. |

^^^ Lauren Faust's said before that Spike was actually raised by Princess Celestia and not Twilight, so maybe "royal business" just had something to do with visiting the princess. It doesn't mean that he is any kind of responsible adult or anything.
Besides, Spike's definitely younger than Twilight and if dragons live for thousands of years than he is definitely still a child. There is no evidence whatsoever in the show that proves Rarity cares for Spike as anything other than a younger brother figure. |

Spike's a child in canon. He's treated maturely, but he's still a preteen at youngest. |
