And for your information, I don't agree with this law, but considering that our government has been a joke since the left wing nut Woodrow Wilson obtained office and said insanity was amplified over 9000 when FDR became president. Obama isn't an asshole, he's just not able to really oppose this kind of shit. He probably realizes that if he loses reelection, they'll put in someone who will reverse gay rights and healthcare gains after running a campaign about other things. He has to not piss off too many people in order to prevent America becoming much worse after the election.
Basically, he ran on the really progressive democratic platform of change, which means that when the economy wasn't fixed by time-travelling space-wizards, the exact opposite of Obama looked appealing to moderates. That let in Conservative Republicans who would strip you of all rights to get security while also taking the do nothing approach to fixing things. I watched a Republican debate a while ago. The only one to actually stand up for civil liberties when the Patriot Act came to debate was a radical Libertarian (as in, he supports leaving NAFTA and the UN). When Ron Paul is the only semi-reasonable person debating, you need different candidates. One day, the Republicans and Conservatives might stop fear-mongering and actually care about freedom and rights. That day is a long, long way off. For the time being, liberal attitudes will help a lot since we can make things like civil liberties much better with change. |

It was attached to a major defense bill, and the number of senators supporting it was greater than the number required to override a veto. If he vetoed the bill, Republicans would claim "Obama tried to stop funding our troops!" and the bill would be passed anyways. |
