I own both; both are good, but if I had to say one over the other, I'd say 1.

The first one has an overworld that's semi-unuseful, unless you like to go treaure-hunting (optional upgrade for your sword), which is only money, shirts, and one type of item you do want to go out of your way to collect them all and 'cash in' with the vodka-lover at earliest oppertunity. However, it's a bit aggrivating because any time you want to re-do one of the repeatable sidequests, you have to go to the 'job board' (there's two, one for the two kinds of sidequests), go do it, and fail or win, go back and be re-hired to do it.

The second eliminates the overworld entirely, so it's got more fights in it. Sidequests are 8-bit minigames--- I perferr playing blind on my first playthrough, but even I'd forgive you if, after playing one of them once, you wanted to look on Gamefaqs to see how to make money more efficiently on that minigame.

If you perferr to have the whole story, obviously, get both (I do find them both regularly in the Used section for decent price at Gamestopo), but you can do 2 without missing too much info (in fact, it's even a joke that a part you may hardly remember from 1--- Travis doesn't remember either).

Music: both are awesome, tough call. For my faves in either: Would you perferr the drunken pink goth's song (1), or Twilight Sparkle calling you out on your hypocracy (2)?

But, really, what you're really buying it for is the boss battles. Obviously, as I alluded to, you might be more interested by the fact Tara Strong voices two bosses in 2.

If you have the money Heinous, get both. Totally worth it and you are not gonna experience something like them in any other game.

It has everything: Lightsabers, anime jokes, kickass music and characters, sweet story, and Twilight Sparkle is in there (the second No More Heroes that is, Tara Strong voices one of the characters)
That's Suda51 greatness.

As Xuncu said, if you can get both, if not start with the first one.

Though, I never needed help to make a fast buck in the second game, specially because the minigames were really fun (specially Man the Meat in my opinion) and you get a nice amount during the main missions anyway.

And yes, the music and the boss battles are the main attraction, for me what I always check in any media is the voice acting, and this is just top notch!

^ Or Steel Python/We are the cowboys/Mach 13 Elephant Explosion.

If anything get the first one. Rank 5 boss is the greatest boss ever!
