It helps stifle cheap edits, anon 985.
In the days of alt.sex.story.text, there were LOTS of cheap edits of popular stories, as they were simply text that can be popped into a text editor. Some of them dropped in, for example, Star Trek and Star Wars characters, and reposted as their own. Madness ensued. Yeah, an edit can be done with an OCR program, which converts images into text, but that's not something everyone has readily available. |
