Oh yeah I forgot about those belt drive locomotives. They worked until someone finally figured out it was cheaper to just have the horse pull the train. |

There are always stupid patents. Even Patent #1 was impractical. They were just registered so the competition would not be able to use the idea. |

Yeah, any machine, every time you put a lever, a wheel, a burner, something where energy is redirected, transformed, or transmitted, you invariably lose energy to friction, resistance, radiation/convection/conduction, ect.
So, yeah, conveyor belts to turn wheels to turn bands to turn the wheels vs 'pull the fucking cart', that invention is very lossy. |

Yep, the only advantage was that the horse had a smooth surface to walk on, and so had less chance of getting injured tripping over a railroad tie. Well, that and on downhill grades with proper gearing, the train could move faster than a horse could run. |
