Oh yeah I forgot about those belt drive locomotives. They worked until someone finally figured out it was cheaper to just have the horse pull the train.

There are always stupid patents. Even Patent #1 was impractical. They were just registered so the competition would not be able to use the idea.

Yeah, any machine, every time you put a lever, a wheel, a burner, something where energy is redirected, transformed, or transmitted, you invariably lose energy to friction, resistance, radiation/convection/conduction, ect.

So, yeah, conveyor belts to turn wheels to turn bands to turn the wheels vs 'pull the fucking cart', that invention is very lossy.

Yep, the only advantage was that the horse had a smooth surface to walk on, and so had less chance of getting injured tripping over a railroad tie. Well, that and on downhill grades with proper gearing, the train could move faster than a horse could run.
