I had this toy as a kid, never really understood if there were any rules to it or if you were just supposed to screw around until you caught all the fish.

My friends and I had two variations. The first is everyone gets assigned a color(or more if fewer people) and you want to hook out more than the other people. In the event everyone gets done before time is up, whoever was first wins. Catching a color not assigned to you doesn't count, and if you pull out an opponent's color it counts for them. The other version was just "get as many as you can free-for-all". I suppose there was kind of a third too, take turns seeing how many you can get in the time limit. The time limit of course was set to a full winding of the toy, though I suppose most of the ones made in recent decades are probably battery powered instead of wound.

I had this toy when I was a wee little kid as well. It had a timer, so you could play alone and see if you could catch all the fishes before running out of time. (It was kinda difficult.)

And of course, now I can't stop hearing the toy's noise in my head.

It was much more fun to play it large scale in funfairs. You could occationally punch the smaller kid next to you if he was ahead of you... good times... not really, I was mostly the smaller kid[/spoiler

they have it at funfairs still. The color of the tail of the one you pull determines the prize. You get three pulls for three bucks, best one gets the prize. One prize per turn - they gotta make money, even if it's these pathetic snakes.
