Flutter-Mac is the most logical pairing. Both are laid back agrarian souls...neither has any desire to ever leave Ponyville.

^So people must have a similar backstory to be in love? Besides, Fluttershy seems the least likely to pursue a relationship, because of her shyness and preference to be with animals.

^^ It helps to have things in common, you know?

Personally I tend to favour romantic partners appreciably different than myself; it can help break you out of your comfort zone every once in a while and learn to appreciate new things.

It helps to have a few basic things in common such as certain values, maybe, but huge similarities in personality or inclination aren't a requirement, or even desirable all the time, IMO.

Why is this such a good ship?
Allow moose to explain:

Big Macintosh is a quiet, orderly, obedient kind of guy that will protect the ones he loves with his life, and do what he feels needs to be done with no hassle or waste.

Fluttershy is a quiet, naive, sweet girl that seeks protection and care from her friends and potential partners.

The way they'd interact would give both adorable and funny scenes.

F: Now Macintosh, we have to plant these flowers carefully, or they will disrupt the other plants.
M: Eeyup, *Follows her and plants them*.
F: *Picks up and flower and places it in his hair*
M: Do I look pertty ma'am?
F: Oh, very much so, *Kisses his cheek*.

Dumb-Bell: Hey look, it's Cluttershy!
Hoops: Who's that guy, your boyfriend? Hahaha!
Mac: In fact sir I am. An' ah think you should leave the lady alone and not call her that name.
Hoops: Or what?
Mac: Or else I might have to raise my hoofs to you boys.

(Or something, I'm no writer, but you can see the potential)

You know what would be funny? If Big Macintosh somehow caught the ire of some horrid beast and tried to run the hell away, only to get cornered.

Then, as his life stops flashing before his eyes, Fluttershy swoops in and goes "NO. NO. BAD DOGGY/KITTY/(whatever). STEP AWAY FROM THE STALLION."

And then they go on to date, because getting rescued is a big turn-on for...anybody, really.

@Dumb_Rock 813265: I'm just saying they're a good match that would be happy settling down and producing heirs for the Apple Family Farm. Look at the other options...

Rarity, Twilight & Dash will all eventually have to leave Ponyville in order to advance their careers. Big Mac would never be happy living in Canterlot.

Pinkie is fun but too much of a manic spaz for Mac. She'd drive him crazy.

And Applejack is his sister. Everybody likes a little wincest but settling down with her and raising inbred foals to inherit the farm is a bit much.

I'm with Ginger on this one. Although fooling around with the others while they are around isn't so bad...

@Ginger Fig

I agree with what you said about AJ, Pinkie and Dash (though in the latter's case, the Wonderbolts might not live so far from Ponyville, giving her a chance to make the relationship work), but in Twi's case, she doesn't really have to leave Ponyville to keep on with her studies, and she's working as the librarian, so leaving seems unlikely. And in Rarity's case, she's already pretty succesful (visits from celebrities, connections in Canterlot) without having to move to Canterlot, so she may be happy settling down in Ponyville with the ones she loves.

Leaving that aside, I'd like to apologize. My last comment came out as rude, and though our opinions may differ, that's no excuse to me for leaving an unwanted comment.

I saw nothing rude about your previous comment...in fact it made a good point.

I think Celestia has more in mind for Twilight than library duty. Once she's done her "grad student" work I see her becoming a Royal Vizier of sorts, empowered by the Princess to handle matters of state.
