My guess is that Spike's maturity depends on certain circumstances.
In the Cutie Mark Chronicles, Spike rapidly grew into an adult by Twilight's magic and yet is dramatically different looking from the one that grew from greed. |

Well, Spike did change a little from being a dragon chick to the one we're familiar with even without greed. So maybe he's still gonna change as he gets older even without greed and may look completely different from feral dragons. |
