You're probably going to rage, but I'll explain myself anyway.
While Past Sins isn't a good story by itself, at least the main character isn't perfect. TTEOAP, on the other hand, is an obvious self-insert piece of crap. And unlike the Legion of Gloom story, it's not a self-insert for the lolz, it's a real Mary-Sue self-insert. |

Let's see...
Main character from TTEOAP: Get's beat up (a whole lot). The Ipod with the internet is a plot device (luna got brainfucked). Bleeds memes all over the floor (along with luna after her brainfuck). In 12 chapters he managed to not be a punching bag for other ponies only once (twice if we count the ursa major encounter where he won and lost at the same time). Being a self insert is the reason he's so genre savvy (and it leads to some comedy when characters are not what he expected) He's not trying to hide the fact it's a self insert... fuck it's even a plot device so whining about it being a self insert is like being annoyed that Fallout Equestria takes place in a post apocalyptic setting. Main character from Past Sins. Defeats Luna and Celestia. Is loved by everyone. Turns fluttershy into a tree. Wealds tremendously powerfull magic. |

-iPod, as stated before, served as a plot device, the efficiency of which may vary from reader to reader. -The memes were a plus for me, seeing as how the whole point is that the guy is from Earth. -Lecturing everyone... ok yeah, I'll agree with you there. -I don't quite recall him boasting about anything really. More like trying to keep his trap shut so as to not spill the beans about MLP being a show and stuff like war. |

When she gets powered back up to Nightmare Moon, she takes on Celestia in the castle and banishes her to the sun because Celestia was not fighting back with all her strength.

Actually there is a reason he can manipulate fire. The voicess that talked to him stated that his body existed on equestria BEFORE he arrived there. Thgerefore he currently inhabits a body that does not belong to him. Now if we add that the first Archom was manipulating ice powers then most likely the second guardian was made to manipulate fire... In short... Firewall currently inhabits a body that was made for the nightmare who was meant to be a secong guardian but the spell fucked up and it became both evil and disembodied. Also he no longer has an Ipod because Luna ate it in one of the first chapters. |

There was one fanfic that I happened to enjoy. "My Little Brony: Reality Vs Fantasy" by Klutzybear is what it is called. It put an interesting spin on the cookie cutter ‘brony in Equestria’ stories that are all the rage today. First off, the protagonist is considered a monster by the denizens of Ponyville (except Pinkie who dragged him into the mess in the first place) found out he could use cartoon physics to his advantage and escapes to the Everfree Forest with Applebloom (unintentionally).
Notice how I’m using past tense here. The fanfic hasn’t been finished and the two most recent chapters have marked a drastic drop in quality. Basically, an evil German sheep doctor attacks Ponyville with an army of half-mechanical hybrids and man at that point does the story stop being fun. Klutzybear apparently thought that certain memes were still funny and has multiple characters make constant references to them. Pinkie becomes Pinkiepool and I know that sounds cool and all, but before, the story had kept every character and element consistent with the show, and no matter what you say, Deadpool does not belong in My Little Pony in any shape or form. Oh, and The Doctor shows up and makes the story even stupider. Naturally, I pretend that these chapters do not exist. |

I enjoyed Past Sins before the major revisions. I enjoy TTEOAP a lot too. Yes, the main character IS a Marie-Sue Self-Insert. But he's enjoyable and a lot of fun. I enjoyed both stories and I'm looking forward to any future chapters. That's it.  |

Past Sins is a well written non insert mary sue story that a lot of people love and a lot of people hate.
Through the Eyes is a humorously written semi self insert self depreciating gary stu human in equestria genre parody story that a lot of people love for what it is and a lot of people don't get. The difference is Through the Eyes strives to be LIKABLE not RECOGNIZED AS HIGH LITERATURE. It's an exercise in fun, not srs bsns. It has never tried to be something it's not and has never failed to be what it has tried to. One of the best things about Through the Eyes is bronies can experience a level of vicarious fantasy fulfillment through the protagonist. Also both these stories are good in their own right and both far exceed the stigma of "fanfiction" quality wise.  |

Let me weigh in that I like both stories. Granted I do think Past Sins wasn't the best MLP fanfic ever and that there were things that could have been executed in another light. But for what it was it was better than most fanfics out there and I wouldn't claim it as the worst THING ever as people have stated. TTEOAP is a fantastic story that doesn't take itself too seriously and is well aware of it's self. It has excellent writing and makes Firewall a believable "self insert" as you will with out coming off as self important. |

1) Why get so bent out of shape by something that was obviously meant as a joke? You might actually get him to follow through on it. If you troll, expect to get trolled back. It would be quite funny to see it actually happen in the story, though. 2) He doesn't get drunk for fun, he got drunk to drown his sorrows, and once he started really getting to writing the fic and seeing the support he was getting from the community for it, he actually sobered up quite a bit IRL and got better at writing (as can be inferred by his mentioning that it was only in the first few chapters that he did it drunk and that he was going to go back and revamp them later). The early chapters are important for continuity in understanding the rest of the story, i.e. that the magic of Equestria meant that his phone maintained an active link to the cellular network and thus internet access IRL by virtue of being inside of a cartoon fantasy world which obeys cartoon laws of reality, such as bottomless this that and the other thing (an endless supply of cigarettes) as well as pulling things out of non-existent pockets. In a random comedy fic, many are much more willing to be generous with their suspension of disbelief, especially when it is intentionally pointed out in the story itself (ham-fisted as it may seem). This started as a work of parody of all of the bad tropes, not as an honest effort to use them non-ironically. It was by accident that it worked so well from the perspectives of many readers. 3) Getting bent out of shape due to an honest mistake? Depending on where you're from, "drunkard" may not be a commonly used word, so it would be easy to mis-recognize it at "drunktard". 4) YEAH WE'RE BEING ON-TOPIC. U MAD BRO ------------ 5) It's silly to assume that something is objectively bad just because you don't like it (as per Cardslafter's earlier comment about Past Sins). Unlike "Twilight", the fans of TTEOAP actually bothered to expound upon the reasons why we love it so much in the fic's comments. Also take to heart that TV Tropes makes it a point that 'Tropes are not good. Tropes are not bad. Tropes are tools.' 6) AND JUST TO BE A NIT-PICKY DOUCHE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, IT'S NOT AN iPod, IT'S AN ANDROID-BASED PHONE. 7) WALL OF TEXT FOR GOOD MEASURE AND GREAT JUSTICE. |
