Well technically they are too anatomically distinct from Pegasi to truly be the same thing. They may both have wings, but they're completely different wings. Even their apparent number of bones is distinct.
It's quite possible that there are more pony tribes then the ones who founded Equestria, and these bat-winged ponies are one such tribe. |

I don't think JK Rowling invented bat winged horses.
As for this show, I was thinking "Night Ponies" if for no other reason than to work with (Night mares) norctural supernatural faeries horses that feed on bad dreams by creating them. Seaponies *Hippocampus*. Breezies *apparently the Neckelavee is too gruesome so they went with this lazy excuse for a fairy pony*. LoL. (alt) some Horses show up: "what's with all the midgets?" |
