It's a story about the growth of Spike. Because dragons live for hundreds of years, much longer than any pony ever could, Spike is there to watch Twilight grow up, every day writing a letter to the Princess for her...until she's on her deathbed. Left alone in the library, tending to her old books, the dragon one night spots a star in the sky - one that motivated and drives him like no other. He packs his things, and steps out into the night. Bigger and stronger than he once was, he's able to easily overcome the terrain. And thanks to the teachings and adventures he's had with all of his friends, he brushes off the temptation to hoard, preventing him from becoming the monster he otherwise could so easily become. And once he reaches the top of the mountain, he writes a letter to Twilight - the pony who's always been there for him, who's helped him become the man he now is, the pony who's looked after him after hatching him from the egg...his mentor, his sister, his best friend. And with tears in his eyes he unleashes his letter into the night sky, hoping that somewhere, among the stars, his faithful friend is watching, smiling down on him, proud of who he's become. I mean really, it's obvious. |

@794560 - No, he's not. It's actually an allegory for a play in five acts, revolving around food items in a kitchen realizing what they are and what their eventual fate will be. The Broccoli plays devil's advocate for the Slap Chop in the cupboard. |

It's also an interesting take on the "Spike outlives everypony" scenario because he stays the same size rather than growing any bigger. I also enjoy the soul-searching journey he appears to be on, and I wonder if he'll return to ponyville after sending that letter or if he'll continue wandering. Whatever the case, this is an excellent piece, and I love it. |

I don't think he would leave the ponies. When Twilight's too old, he could petition other ponies if they would want his help. Unless he's made a big scene of himself, I don't think they'd reject his services. |

As for why Spike hasn't grown, I guess the comic implies that dragon's only grow if they start hoarding. But yeah, I hate to ask here, but I'm pretty new to posting on Ponibooru (been lurking for a looooong time though) and wanted to know how you post links and images in comments. |

"Secret of My Excess" changed our assumptions on dragon sizes a bit, I'm a fan of this pony sized Spike idea now. |
