We had two bags of cotton candy, seventy-five wrapped peppermints, five sheets of high-powered candy dots, a saltshaker half-full of powdered sugar, and a whole galaxy of multicolored gumdrops, lollipops, hard candies, tootsie rolls... Also, a quart of cola, a quart of lemon-lime soda, a case of cider, a pint of raw sugar, and two dozen candy canes. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious sugar collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the raw sugar. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a pony in the depths of an sugar binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. |
