This is based on Lauren Faust recently stating that it was Princess Celestia who raised Spike when Twilight Sparkle was still a filly.

Well twilight was a little filly when spike hatched maybe celestia took care of him untill twilight was old enough to take care of him |

i says both have a say in it, when he was older to walk Princess C, gave her to twilight at times. (either to catch a break or play with or help raise like every mother who has a younger daughter and a baby) |

If Faust is still in charge of production then this would be cannon. But she's not so the production team can still give Spike a completely different back story. |

It would explain why Spike is often more familiar and informal with Prince Celestia than even Twilight Sparkle is. He doesn't even bow to her. |
