What I got from the episode was that unicorns have magic, pegasi can fly and earth ponies can starve the other two groups to death should they choose to do so. |

I guess this explains why the rich ponies in equestria are unicorns and the guards are all pegasi.
I wonder how Celestia united the three tribes. I don't think it would be diplomatic... |

^ There are rich unicorns, we've seen rich earth ponies in Manehattan. Probably rich pegasi up in Cloudale somewhere. The pegs in this episode were all nicely dressed so they probably had money. But they are very Greco-Roman so having a proud millitary is in the culture. Some of the modern pegasai opted to keep with tradition, but since they don't really have wars, they act as guards instead. |

Think about their cloth and other complex objects they use. I think those are made by unicorns. It would be very hard to build a house without hands or magic. Even a simple glass bowl they drink juice from. How would you make one as an earth pony? I'm not saying anything is impossible, but extremly hard without hands. There is more use of those horns. I'm not sure about pegasus however. They can fly, but not many works require actual flying. They might have a smaller population so they are rare and useful too. |
