It probably has a different use in Equestria. Maybe it helps plow out unrully creatures like Manticores and smaller Dragons?

More interesting is that that train's engine appears to be functional instead of having a team of stallions hauling the whole thing. Maybe the Appaloosa train was just being pulled manually because the engine was broken but there was cargo that simply had to get through?

Then again, maybe the reason it didn't work is because it hit a cow.

It's probably just used to plow snow off the tracks if there's too much on the tracks

Well, the sheep objected to being herded, then AJ just slammed the gate shut on their faces; in the context that they're just as sentient... well, within the context of Equestria, is Sweet Apple Acres like one big boarding house? Is Applejack some kind of slumlord?

^ Perhaps 'lesser' hooved beings are not permitted to stay in Equestria unless they live in special camp- I mean, enclosures.

Equestria is a dangerous place after all (mare-do-well episode), and there are no enough super heroes to rescue every cow and sheep who wandered to the rails.

@Anon323: I have the headcanon that the ponies pulling the Appaloosa train were just proving they were badass enough to pull a whole train and still not be late. It makes it seem significantly more awesome that way.

@Otto: Snow on the track not being an excuse for a delay long enough to make walking a faster option!? Equestria IS a paradise!

after seeing what a train can do to a semi stalled across the tracks, i wonder why the need for the cow-plow? wouldn't the animal iust turn into ground beef?

So wait....

Trains don't need to be pulled by teams of ponies now!?

Cow Catchers also served as slightly effective snowploughs back in the day, but when snow got really bad, engines designed to plough snow off the tracks would be used to lead a train through.

The stuff I learned from Thomas the Tank Engine...

It has hearts on it, so it plows through the cows with love.

@729 - It's still +600 pounds of meat and bone, which can damage parts of the train, so the guards wer engineered toe be easily and cheaply replacable, which is why the bumper of even luxury cars are still just plastic.
