The problem is that Applejack is the best pony. She doesn't have the kind of problems that you can easily build an episode around. She's the Reliable Friend, and the Reliable Friend doesn't get her own episode. :( |

That doesn't mean that there isn't any potential. There are two big AJ-centric plots I would love to see made into episodes: (1) She loses her hat and has a massive freak-out trying to find it. Nobody can quite understand and just tells her to get a new one, but later we find out that her hat has some kind of treasured sentimental value that can't be replaced. (2) She and Pinkie - as the two earth ponies of the cast - team up to save the day in a way those highfalutin pegasi and unicorns would never expect, thus proving how awesome their breed can be without the help of any special powers or abilities AJ's a great character, but her problem is that she's a little tricky to use to her full potential, especially in a show that promotes solving all your problems with the power of friendship, which is a serious hindrance to a very physically-oriented character like her, who probably could have solved quite a few of the problems in some episodes if she was allowed to beat them up. If the writing staff had their priorities straight, they would have worked around that somehow and delivered us a great episode that reinforces the character's importance. But apparently, we don't need that. What we need instead is for Rarity to go on vacation and get an extended song sequence all to herself. AGAIN. Despite the fact that Tabitha St. Germaine doesn't do her own singing but Ashleigh Ball does (could you imagine how awesome on so many levels a duet song between Applejack and Rainbow Dash would be?), and that we haven't had an episode revolve around AJ since Fall Weather Friends, and even in that one she had to share the spotlight. But hey, there's still fifteen episodes left this season and another one on the way. I'm sure that in all that time, the writers will finally get their act together and let her do something amazing. Until then, I'll be patient. |
