| SaddlesoapOpera #781371 7 months ago |
That could just be a modern flag they happened to have as a prop, so the crowd watching gets it.
Either that or myths of Alicorns predated their actual appearance. |

A lesson: do not take theatrical play so serious and learn2metaphor >_> |
| liquidXTC #781380 7 months ago |
Makes sense. But where do Celly and Luna come from if they weren't godlike creatures that were always there? |
| Thaluka #781382 7 months ago |
Or, there are other alicorns. Someone raises the sun at this time period, stated in the play to be the unicorns, but alicorns are called unicorns on the show. |

What if Discord ruled from Paleopony Period to Classical Era? |
| SaddlesoapOpera #781389 7 months ago |
Well, there are clearly still missing patches during each era, but I was trying to stick to what seems to be directly suggested by the canon, without filling in with too much speculation... |

This must stretch over a few thousand years at least.
Luna was gone for almost 1000 years. And I also think that Discord and both sisters, when they were together, ruled for even longer before. So, they have a slower progression than humanity. |
| Anonymous #781395 7 months ago |
This makes perfect sense to me. |
| SaddlesoapOpera #781403 7 months ago |
@Cgeta
Yeah..it's a ludicrously long span. Twilight dressing as Star Swirl would be like someone on present-day Earth dressing up as a SPECIFIC Ancient Egyptian figure and expecting to be recognized. Eggheads, man.... 0_o |

@misnamed - In-universe propaganda, actually. Celestia and Luna legitimizing their rule by claiming to be the embodiment of the harmony between the three races. |

Ehh...
Variant I – episode-chronological Okay, so, from s02ep01 we know that Equestria was founded before Sisters came and ep11 confirms it pretty much. I’m not taking latest episode so serious, it was pretty much metaphorical theatrical adaptation, so I’m going to extract only core idea/concept: at the dawn of the times there were 3 different types of ponies – unicorns, earth ponies and pegasi. Wendigo and the “winter” wasn’t real, it is a metaphor that represents the consequences of a discord between those three races: the more there was differences and dissidence the harsher and harder times were for all of them. It is like a Cold War times when a small and silly action made the situation more heated and dangerous. So yeah, at some point it became unbearable for all the ponies, may be almost at the edge of a war, but in such desperate times they managed to find a strength to overcome all the obstacles and differences between the, and thus discovered magic of friendship/love (abstract “flaming heart’ that dispel the winter aka “dark times”). We have at last few different ages: 1. Pre-classical age (official name from ep04; notable events/figures: Starswirl the Bearded) 2. Classical age (foundation of Equestria, discovering the Harmony and whatnot) 3. Age of Chaos (Discord’s appearance) 4. Age of Renaissance (Royal Pony Sister came into Equestria, defeated the Discord and took over the land to maintain the harmony since then) 5. Golden Age (1000 years of Celestia’s rulership after the banishment) 6. Modern Age (pretty much events of the actual show) Variant II – when the metaphors and symbolism comes to play Remember that flag with two alicorns, one white and one cyanish? Surprise, they quite much resembles Luna and Celestia, even despite the fact of color inaccuracy (inb4 it is not Sister - NONE of their appearance in every stained-glass or book illustration was color correct, note that please). So I was thinking how could it be explained in reasonable and sane manner and… what if Discord actually took place in the play? Remember that in the beginning there was *discord* (basically racism, hatred and everyone’s suffering) between ponies, and this is quite much fits the portrayal of Discord: chaos and disharmony. He loves to plant such seeds of hate between friends/ponies. So what if all this divisive and opposition between ponies in the beginning (pre-classical ear) symbolizes Discord itself? This works very well, actually, and correlates with episode 01 of s02: when discord/Discord was defeated (ponies put differences aside =Sister defeated Discord that took over them with Harmony aka showed them the correct path to co-existing), ponykind found/founded their “promised land” – Equestria. This explains the flag with the alicrons: > 00:00:24,769 --> 00:00:28,966 > Thus, the two sisters maintained balance > for their kingdom and their subjects: > 00:00:28,966 --> 00:00:31,228 > All the different types of ponies. Sisters actually “guided” (again, metaphorically) the ponies in to the new land/age. It would explain many things and this damn flag. So yeah, in this case we have: 1. Pre-classical Era 2. Age of Discord (“discord” took over the ponies) 3. Classical Era (Renaissance, foundation of Equestria) 4. Golden Age (Celestia’s rulership) 5. Modern Age But wait, you say, this does not explain a thing. Discrod actually existed as a character, why it wasn’t shown then. Well, what can I say – this cartoon is for young watchers and what is animated cartoon good at? Right, visual forms. For better understanding for young audience the creators play everything with visual appearance, this is why those Windigo existed – to show the suffering of ponies more direct and straightforward, to show the threat of the discord between them. As I said, variant 2 plays on metaphors, so Discord’s appearance in the theatrical playset was abstract. tl;dr - it is show for a kids, try to be in their shoes and you will see things in a bit different light |

@781486:
"He ruled Equestria in an eternal state of unrest and unhappiness" were Celestia's words. Sounds like he was top banana for quite some time. Hence, his own time period. |

#Kein:
>So yeah, in this case we have: >1. Pre-classical Era >2. Age of Discord (“discord” took over the ponies) >3. Classical Era (Renaissance, foundation of Equestria) >4. Golden Age (Celestia’s rulership) >5. Modern Age Yeah, thats pretty much what I had in mind. |

Celestia Luna and some other ali are the wendigos. |
| Anonymous #784459 7 months ago |
This is actually pretty accurate, the only thing I'd have to disagree with is the Diarchic/Soloral Era, because they didn't "find" the elements of harmony, they used "the most powerful magic known the ponydom.
My guess is, though, that the Elements of Harmony were actually formed sometime at the end of the pre-classical era and at the start of the classical era. |
| Anonymous #784660 7 months ago |
^ Check S2E1 - Celestia uses the phrase "After discovering the Elements of Harmony".
Also, the Celestia/Luna on the stained glass for Discord's first defeat are the same colour as the banner at the end of the play...just noticed that. Huh. |

| richfiles #787076 7 months ago |
Yes, Discord's eternal rule... Just like Nightmare Moon's eternal night of a few extra hours.
I agree with the image whole heartedly. I also feel Luna and Celestia were born AFTER the events depicted by the play. I believe they were born in the form they hold, as a result of the magic discovered by the three races discovering the power of Harmony I feel Discord happened after these events, and that Celestia and Luna discovered the power that led to them, the power that made the land of Equestria harmonious, before Discord's rule, and used that power to forge the Elements of Harmony, and use them to fight back against Discord. |
| Anonymous #818479 6 months ago |
@Kein: I see no reason to doubt the existence of the windigo and the literal use of the magic of friendship to defeat them, it's not like any of it is inconsistent with what we know of their world. Sure any number of things in the play *might* be inaccurate or metaphorical, but there's nothing to suggest that anything in particular is. Until there is it only makes sense to take it at face value, you're pretty much just making assumptions. |
| Anonymous #1195990 3 months ago |
I would switch the Discord Era with the pre-classical and classical era. There's simply no way to explain why the Sun, Moon and Weather is not working properly and needed Ponies to maintain diligently without Discord messing laws of reality up. |
| Anonymous #1351873 2 months ago |
@#1195990: Except Discord already ruled when Luna/Celestia showed up, and they don't pre-date the pre-classical era, or they would have featured in the story. |
