PNG can, infact, 'compress' by using less colors.

Lossless is not always good -- audio can be compressed using lossy methods quite gracefully and much more effectively.

But with pictures it's just hideous.

@Martingale: Depends on what you mean by "effectively". I can't hear the difference between a V0 MP3 and a FLAC on my headphones, but it's definitely noticeable on speakers.

Lossless is nearly always the best way to go.

I set my pics to maximum in jpeg. Hardly see any difference to png.

I'm not saying don't ever post pngs. If you make a wallpaper, that should probably be png. But most of the time they're not appropriate.
(Indexed pngs are a different matter.)

What, did you set it to maximum compression after resizing it?
No shit it looks terrible.
Idiot.

^^Thanks, I was about to do exactly that comparison.
Seriously, there are times for jpegs and a time for PNGs, not everything is always a case of 'better or worse'.

High color variation will get you a smaller filesize with a max-quality jpg. If the image has fewer colors (like a vector trace) or needs transparency (again, vector trace), png is better.

OP: Way to totally one-side things with an absolute shitty compression setting. Just for that, I'm going to upload things only in JPG.
