I think it's assumed the blue Gem was stolen by the diamond dogs as they dragged them down into the caves.

No matter if he still has the gem or not. I am now reminded of this fact and can't help but think that in retrospect, that's very touching.
I'm not really a fan of Spike/Rarity pairing (not really against it either though), but this made me feel weird on some uncertain level.

Spike's was a pretty common gemstone, though, wasn't it? I mean, shouldn't the "rings" be of equal value?

I mean, he gave Rarity a Fire Ruby. Made a big deal of it and everything. Well, she did. She also pretty much just manipulated him into giving it to her.

Whereas Rarity just more or less picked out the biggest from the pile they collected as a "good-boy" snack for him.

In this relationship, the guy is stupid/easily pleased and the girl is manipulative by promising intimate affection.

...Well, slap me on the knee, this IS a perfect picture of a married relationship!

(To those who do value those relationships, for whatever reason, I mean no offense.)

But she did show some affection to him, called him her hero, she even kissed him twice and defended the gem he gave her with her life when the grown up spike was going to eat it. So ya, i do think she cares.

768523 got it right. Its why I put the screen caps together.

Spike's gem was common but became special because it came from Rarity. He didn't eat it.

Rarity's gem may be rare but it was the fact that Spike gave it to her which made it precious to her. She said it herself when protecting it from the "rampaging dragon".

No, it never "became special". It was common and remained common to everyone but Spike.
Rarity's gem may be rare but it was the fact that Spike gave it to her which made it precious to her. She said it herself when protecting it from the "rampaging dragon".

By and large the reason Rarity liked the gem is because it was rare.

Claiming the gem meant something because someone gave it to her is basically like saying someone should be ashamed for some action because they violated some abstract moral boundary. It's sort of a mask to hide what's ultimately self-interest. She just didn't want the dragon to eat it.

@dudemang That's convoluted, dude. In fact, that's the exact opposite of the latest episode's concept. Giving is better than receiving.

How can something not become special when you typed it already became special to Spike?

And that's your interpretation about how you perceived Rarity's reasons for defending the gem from the dragon. All I heard was how she went on saying it was from her kind and generous friend.

She never even described anything about the gem itself to the dragon. All she went about was who it was from and how kind Spike was for giver her that thing.

And yes, you're right she didn't want the dragon to eat it because its precious to her.

@769392

I think I remember something like Twilight saying how brave or heroic Spike was for sacrificing that gem Rarity gave him when he was using it as bait for the diamond dogs.

They must've understood how special it was to spike at least.

I guess we mean different things. The gem isn't inherently more special even if Spike valued it. The phrase "was common but became special" implies otherwise, at least to me.

All I heard was how she went on saying it was from her kind and generous friend.

All she went about was who it was from and how kind Spike was for giver her that thing.

769709: "You can't assume that anything said by anyone possesses its actual face value."

In real life, no. But in an animated show with stories designed to teach young people about moral things like greed is bad and giving is good, I'd like to think that what a character on that show says means what it means.

On the sliding scale of pointlessness, I'd say the above exchange rings in at just between ordering a salad at a steakhouse and the old "Who will be the winner of this debate" debate.
