@Jimmytrius: Some people hate on anything that depicts characters from the show as straight. At least this one doesn't seem to have caused a shitstorm in the comments, though. The optimist in me wants to believe that it means it's still safe to straight-ship Octavia without a bunch of slash fans getting butthurt. |

They do rather pointedly avoid giving male characters lines when they can avoid it. Notice June Bug talks, but Lickety Split doesn't?
As far as I can tell, there are all of six episodes where more than one male pony has lines. Boast Busters, Bird in the Hoof, Show Stoppers, Over A Barrel, Best Night Ever, and Sweet & Elite. If I've missed one, I'll be glad to hear it. But I think this contributes to a sense that the male characters are functionally irrelevant, and that straight shipping is thus just "Ew, gay". I don't think that's all of the reaction, but I find even I need to sometimes take a step back and assess these kind of images "cold". |

They have a lot of voice actresses who are already in the recording studio who can provide voice work for female background ponies. When they want to have a male character talk, that's one more actor they have to bring into the studio and pay hourly for maybe only 2 seconds of dialogue (and they have to round up to the nearest hour). When it's a fairly important character like Discord or Big Macintosh they can spare the expense, but in many cases it's probably just cheaper to just give a throwaway line to a female pony and have one of the other actresses record the line during a reading for another character.
I hope that changes though, because our bro ponies need more love in the show. |
