My headcanon: She did send the guards, but the Wonderbolts (being far faster and not wearing armor) got there way ahead of them. By the time the guards showed up, it was all over but the explanations.

the wonderbolts are a play on the blue angels, a flight demonstration squadron of the US navy, piloting f/a-18 hornets. so the wonderbolts are military and they're fast. makes sense sending them |

Wonderbolts are an exhibition squadron, makes them no less qualified if they were in the area. I mean shit, did you see Spike's headscales get sheared off? A direct hit might have decapitated him.
Besides, in my headcanon Celestia herself is always too busy fighting zombies, aliens, cyborg pirates and eldritch abominations to give two shits about what's happening in Ponyville. Let the grad student and her friends handle it. |

Like 013, I think the Wonderbolts are an exhibition squadron similar to the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels. They may do shows, but they're still active duty fighter pilots. |

@Anon 765958: True, the Thunderbirds' planes differ from any other F-16 in only two ways. The paint scheme, and the gatling cannon is replaced with a smoke generator. It takes very little time to convert them back to combat specs. And the pilots are absolutely trained as fighter pilots first.
And Fleur is an adorable centerfilly. |
