Anon 762640^ Movies like that appeal to those who laugh at other's misfortune. If you feel sympathy for the foolish, knowing that we are all fools at some time, then such movies are almost painful to watch.

I very severely dislike seeing the misfortune of others and almost never find that kind of thing funny at all in media.

Yet, Christmas Story is and has for most my life been one of my favorite movies. I think it's mostly the narrator's voice, acting, and style of humor (as derived from the book itself) that makes it, and it far transcends the whole "misfortune" aspect.
