Dwarf Fortress is like a hybrid of Starcraft, Minecraft, and the hopes and dreams of someone with mind-bending levels of Asperger's.
No seriously, don't play this. You can't directly control your dwarves and the bugs will drive you up the wall. Children don't wear clothes, blood spreads on its own everywhere, and dwarves can and will wall themselves in and mine themselves to their deaths. The AI is oh-god-what and the UI is a fucking nightmare. Do not install this if you value your sanity. |

And yes, I am speaking as someone who has gone through multiple fortresses, some totally successful (never got raided, I quit when my FPS died)
Oh did I mention that? The creator doesn't even want to try multithreaded processing. This game will crush one core of your CPU and your FPS will die screaming. It's also extremely closed-source and rumor has it that the code is kudzu. Don't. Play. This. |

One of the few games that NEEDS a addon (dwarf therapist) to be actually playable.
I bucking dare you try and find a dwarf good at a specific task without it in a 100+ large dwarf fort. Other than that it's a awesome game once you get over some of the problems and no graphics whatsoever. |

Don't forget the nearly vertical learning curve. That was really the dealbreaker for me, learning how to actually play was such a pain in the ass. |

Go to dwarf fortress wiki, look up mega-constructions. Look up boatmurdered, read that tale. And the difficultly is not because the game is _actually difficult_. The 'difficultly' is because you have to _think_ for once in a videogame. |

I'd try it, but I never get around to actually doing anything. I tried looking for Let's Plays of it, but I didn't much care for any of them. I think it looks fascinating, though. I would play it if I put any effort into anything that I do. |

It IS hard, and you WILL fail a lot, but for some players that's the fun of it. And some of us love reading other peoples' stories about it, but wouldn't ever touch the game with a ten foot pole. |
