Well the mane questline has you being a Dragon Hunter, but apparently one can postphone the mane quest the moment they clear the 'tutorial' stage. |

You don't HAVE to kill dragons, but most of them will try to kill you. There are a couple that help you, though. |

@coolgame17 Sort of. I've only sunk less than 20 hours in the game, but the gist of it is: "Dragons have returned, they're trying to kill everyone, and I am one of the few BORN to put a stop to them."
The Dragon powers are separate from Magic, so you could happily create the most powerful mage you wanted while never killing a Dragon. The drawback is that while you can learn the words for the special Dragonborn powers, you won't have the dragon souls required to unlock them and use them. |

Most dragons will attack you if you get close enough. Heck, sometimes they will appear in a town and attack. As far as I know, there are only scripted dragons that are non-hostile to you. As to not killing dragons, don't go talk to the Jarl of the first city, Whiterun, and no dragons will ever begin spawning. One of my friends is doing that, and he likes to imagine that his character thinks he is going crazy everytime he comes across one of the dragon word walls. |
