The real irony of the "name wars" is that Hasbro's names are actually MORE creative than the fanon ones. Hasbro's names are not perfect, but the fans just reach for whatever name is the most obvious and generic and they run with it. They looked for names that were unique, and like it or not, "Heartstrings" is a much more creative and meaningful name than "Lyra." |

The problem with the hasbro names is they rely on knowing the pony. Names do not work that way. People (and presumably ponies) are named when born, not once they have a personality- in this case, cutie mark.
Heartstrings is a weird name to give a baby who may or may not be good at an instrument with strings. Lyra isn't, really. Carrot Top for a redhead? Sure. Blues? He's BLUE! Two blues, in fact! But Noteworthy? Pretentious name for a kid! He's lucky he grew up to have note cutie mark, because a guy named Noteworthy whose special talent is digging holes would be kinda dumb. Though fans do that crap, too. Let's call THIS pony the same thing as her cutie mark! GENIUS But then there's ponies like Davenport, Caesar, Promontory, Bonbon, Ace, Bacon and Eggs, all f which are good standalone names that dont entirely rely on the mark. And even names that DO rely on the mark are sometimes great, like Lily, Daisy, and Rose- 3 flower names, 3 flower marks, always seen together, it's cute. Get over it. |

"Heartstrings" could have been so named because of how emotional her parents were upon their daughter being born. Golden Harvest could have gotten her name because of her golden color, and because her parents liked to garden (no-one names their kid Carrot Top, anyway). I'll give you that Noteworthy is a bit of an odd coincidence, but at least it's more creative than "blues." |
| PVRyohei #745630 7 months ago |
Hasbro names may be more creative, but the personalities they gave them on those cards are not. |
| Anonymous #745654 7 months ago |
The hasbro names are too cute for my tastes... |
| Fanloser #745728 7 months ago |
@#745615 Not really if you think about it, "Blues" seems more like a double pun, it refers to his cutie mark being musical notes (i.e. the music type Blues), and his appearance of being two different shades of blue. While Noteworthy seems to only refer to his cutie mark and nothing else, seeing as he's done nothing noteworthy in the show that would help him earn that name. |

Fleur de lis is a stupid name.
I still want everybody to call her "Escort Sluthooves" |

"Hasbro's names are actually MORE creative than the fanon ones."
That's exactly the reason why I don't get why people call Derpy Hooves Ditzy Doo. Hasbro calling her Derpy is the big nod to this whole grown-up fandom, something the fans created and is being recognized by the company, a recognition of the fandom's existence. /rant |

@Fuzzy_Logic
That's just how names in the series work. Fans do it. The show does it. Names based on personality/talents that aren't evident at birth doesn't make sense, but it's just something we overlook in enjoying the show. |
| Fanloser #746105 7 months ago |
@#746037 Because Ditzy Doo was in the show, it's for a pony that's not all that bright and messed up during Winter Wrap, and nobody at Hasbro calls her Derpy Hooves, the animation team does among themselves, but there's nothing official. |
| Anonymous #746170 7 months ago |
@fonypag
Several of the Mane 6 have names that relate to their personality. How about Fluttershy? Who would name their kid something that means "shy," let alone in doing so accuratelty predict her personality? Rarity's special talent is finding rare gems, which must have required some serious foresight by her parents. The official names for the background ponies are no more farfetched than the ones that are already being used by the other characters in the show. The problem with the Fan names is that so many of them painfully generic, and honestly do not fit with the show. Seriously, "Derpy Hooves?" Why would anyone in Equestria name their daughter after a South Park reference? For that matter, why would they name their redheaded daughter "Carrot Top" when that is just a silly nickname that offen carries derogatory connotations? The fandom has come up with some good names-- "Alley Strike" was a recent example of one that was actually clever, and I've always liked Octavia. There's also Vinyl Scratch, Aloe, and Lotus, all of whom I like the names of regardless of whether or not they're official. However, a couple of good ones does validate the bad ones, and I'm certainly not going to demand that Hasbro or Studio B recognize all the fan names if they can come up with something better in many cases. |

@Fanloser
"Then why would people call Derpy Ditzy?" I guess is what I should've asked. She was just a background pony that /co/ decided to adopt as their "OC" for fun, Lauren acknowledged it, she calls her Derpy, the crew now calls her Derpy, and Hasbro HAS been showing signs of her name being Derpy. Sure there might not be anything really official, but they're having fun with it as much as we are. Ditzy was in the show yes, and Lauren did say that she was thinking of giving Derpy's character model to Ditzy, but said she wouldn't want to step on the Derpy love. That's kind of why I don't like it when people call her Ditzy. Sorry if I'm rambling but I've been meaning to let this steam off for quite a while. |
| Anonymous #746296 7 months ago |
If she never gets named in the show, they'll probably keep calling her "Derpy." If they ever actually write a story with her though, I am 90% sure they are going to go with Ditzy Do, because "Derpy" is a South Park reference and would not make sense within the show's world. |

Lyra is greek for Lyre you imbecile plebeian. |
| Fanloser #746380 7 months ago |
@#746191 Okay first of all, what "signs?" And no, the image from the Castle Creator game doesn't count, it was just a scrap that they got from the animation team and Hasbro probably didn't give a flying fuck what that pony was called they just know that some people liked her. Second of all, you don't like that the people call her Ditzy because of simple logic? I.E. Derpy is usually characterized as being not all that bright and constantly makes "How the hell did you do that" type of mistakes, then suddenly there's a pony that's apparently not all that bright and has made a "How the hell did you do that" type of mistake named Ditzy Doo, put two and two together figured that Derpy Hooves was Ditzy Doo. And for the record, I prefer Ditzy Doo over Derpy Hooves because it sounds less like an insult. But that's just my opinion. |

Not to mention that Ditzy Do is actually creative, and not a generic description. Derpy Hooves = Derpy eyes meme + horse hooves. Yeah, that sure took a lot of imagination! Ditzy Do is a clever pun on an aerial maneuver, and it sounds in line with the way characters in the show are named. I would much prefer Ditzy Do be her canon name, and it would also work nicely with a foreshadowing of her being in Winter Wrap Up. |

"Derpy" appeared on a storyboard. End of discussion. |

@#746380
"it was just a scrap that they got from the animation team" How can you be so sure? The only other thing is when they acknowledged it on their Facebook page. It might not be much but it's more than nothing. "Hasbro probably didn't give a flying fuck what that pony was called they just know that some people liked her" Then why would they call DJ-Pon3 by her name in that commercial? If that was the animation team's doing then why wouldn't they get called out on that? Everything goes through Hasbro right? If they didn't give a flying fuck about what Derpy's name was, why wouldn't they go to the lengths to make sure that this single background pony, who could have gone completely unnoticed, is a certain name? Hell, I honestly bet if Hasbro was like that, I doubt it would be either of the two, it would probably be some name relating to her cutie mark, like Bubbly Sky. (yikes) As for the whole "Derpy is an insult" thing, in all fairness it's not. Last time I checked there is no real definition for the word "Derp", there's a bunch of them. Quite frankly I always thought the "acting or behaving in a silly manner" was the most used, but making it an insult is what YOU choose to define the word with. But anyway, the two are still not the same character to me. She's still Derpy Hooves the mail-mare to me and has been for nearly a year with all love and care. If it ends up not being Derpy than oh well. I don't know how other people would react but I certainly won't care for her anymore. Anyway, didn't mean to pollute this pic with an argument, but I had to rant. |
| Anonymous #747041 7 months ago |
@#746900 Not really, according to Faust the team was given a lot of freedom to create, all it has to do is fall within the respective guidelines, Hasbro couldn't care less about what goes on it. The animation team said LONG ago that she was gonna be a "where's waldo" for the fans. It's doubtful that Hasbro fully knows what's going on or that everything goes through them, if it did they may try to cram as much MLP merch in the show as possible. Hasbro probably doesn't know, nor care, just as long as the ratings and toy sales are good, they're good with whatever. You got to remember that Hasbro is a company first, they don't care about you, they care about your money. And it's still a possibility that Derpy/Ditzy may be called "Bubbly Sky", in toy form at least, just for legal reasons. Face it, all things Derpy are most likely due to the animation team. |

I like how the name Heartstrings is one aspect of the character plus another word to make it sound more girly but somehow it's more creative and meaningful than using one aspect of the character plus another word to make it sound more pony like. |

Ditzy = non insult..? |

Hey! Only Luna is allowed to use CAPSLOCK for cool!
Anyway, I like the fact that "Lyra" and "Blues" were given the single word names of "Heartstrings" and "Noteworthy" as opposed to many of the others who have two word names. It's like they were trying to give the fandom enough wiggle room for "Lyra" and "Blues" to be tagged on without having to deal with copyright issues. They probably couldn't do that with with "Carrot Top" who has a two word fanon name that wouldn't pass the copyright laws. |

Blues = Music genre.
"Blues" has musical note(s) for a cutie mark. Uncreative? I think not! |
| Anonymous #873108 6 months ago |
I don't get why everyone thinks that Noteworthy and Blues are the same pony. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME AT ALL. What? Just because they are both Blue and they have notes as cutie marks means they are the same? They don't even have the same cutie Mark for Pete's sake. They have completely different eye colors, different shades of blue for hair and body, and their hooves are different too. So I demand that Noteworthy be labeled as a new and different pony. |
| Anonymous #902559 5 months ago |
Because "Pinkie Pie" and "Rainbow Dash" are completely creative names that are worlds more imaginative than "Lyra" or "Blues" or "Fleur-de-lis".
Your argument is stupid. |

Lyra = Heartstrings's humansona name.
Carrot Top = Golden Harvest's comedian name. |
