They're rich, aristocratic assholes.

They probably thought that Nightmare's never-ending night was just that fat bitch not setting her damn alarm clock.

Well, the unicorn aristocrats may not have any idea who Rainbow is because the Best Young Flyers Competition took place in Cloudsdale, which none of them could get to. There may have been a passing remark on it, but they likely dismissed it out of hoof because they either had never heard of a Sonic Rainboom or thought it was all hearsay.

The others... Yeah, I got nothin'.

maybe just elitist behaviour. they cant accept that ponies from lower classes (twilight being one of them because she socialises with them) are chosen to perform such important tasks. So they know about it but play it down to protect their self-image.

they have their own little social circle that they hobnob with. I don't think they'd spend any time with anypony else except to give them orders.

^true. but since he showed sympathy for the commoners, i think he will be taking a lot more heat from the upper class when the chance arises (compared to if he hadnt).

Personal headcanon: Fancy Pants asked Rarity to introduce her friend, didn't he? She proceded to do exactly that. The canterlot(tian?) elite then started to be VERY, VERY polite and friendly...

Quick, name America's last six Medal of Honor recipients. Or if you're from a Commonwealth country, the last few VCs.

The most nameable American hero right now is probably Cairo.

As for the rest: Fluttershy's 15 minutes of fame were a flash in the pan, nobody named Twilight at the Gala, nor did the disruptors get caught to be named, and "Celestia's #1 student" and "sonic Rainboom" are matters of interest to smaller groups.

All that said: yes, they probably should have been somewhat more notorious than utter lack of recognition. If nothing else, Rarity has met both Photo Finish and Hoity Toity on business terms. But if they get permanently famous, it would alter many of the show's underlying assumptions. Perhaps as a finale.

- right hoof of princess Celestia, archmage;
- best (young) flier in Equestria, can destroy a building hitting it hard;
- most important member of the family who own all the apple orchards, can kill you with one hoof;
- supermodel who can and will casually throw around dangerous fauna if angry;
- AND... uhh... obviously maniacal mare (with a CANNON)
- plus Rarity the ultimate trendsetter.
All of them have the princesses eternal gratitude.

^this

A lot of people doing amazing and heroic things everyday, but people don't know it. Quick! Name at least one of the Nave SEALS who was involved in the assassination of bin Laden! Or name a living astronaut! Name someone who won a Nobel Peace Prize last year!

Accomplishment does not always welcome recognition. Those in Canterlot are mostly just the wealthy and celebrities of Equestria (entertainers, old money, etc.)

This make the unseen scene where Rarity introduces her friends the other's anons are discussing even more hilariously awkward for the "pony elite".

Photo Finish was among the elite. I'd hope that at least she'd still remember Flootershy.

Well Twilight is sort of easy to explain, considering she was something of a shut-in recluse before moving to Ponyville, yet somehow Spike has enough pull to get Hoity Toity to Ponyville for Rarity's Fashion Show in "Suited for Success"

"And these are?"

"Ah, my friends, of course. You've seen the stained glass windows on the approach to Celestia's throne, yes?
No? Oh, you poor dear, that will make this difficult. You see...we're in several of them."

Well he just had to explain Hoity Toity how much Twi is important for the Princesses. She has the means for confirming that with a quick background check, I suppose.

I like to think Celestia is specifically covering up for then, so the extreme fame won't ruin their lifes(like it did for Fluttershy the once she got too much of it), it goes like this:

Randon high-class unicorn #31: "Tell me, Princess Celestia... is that your student and her friends on the stained glass?"

Celestia: "Oh? No, no, it is just a coincidence, ponies look a lot like each other those days... now let me drag you away from it before you look at it long enough to realize I just lied to you."

I mean, they are beyold national heroes, they are planet-wide heroes, think of what happened to Fluttershy in "Green Isn't Your Color", but instead of fashion fans only, make it everypony.
