She was trying to be a model for Rarity's dress.
No pony could think that what she was attempting was actually dancing.

Yeah, not the smartest move for a supposedly clever pony.

This is twilight, people. you expect Twilight to be well adjusted and understanding of how social events like that work?

For someone as well read as her, one would think basic etiquette wouldn't be something outside of her knowledge.

But... wasn't crashing the party Rainbow Dash's idea?

She's from Canterlot originally. Maybe all those lessons about friendship pushed the knowledge of social graces out of her brain?

In other words, she exhibits the behaviour of all my ex girlfriends and most of the females I've known.

Twilight Sparkle is great, but she's not perfect, and she is female after all. All women are capable of becoming cruel and vengeful fiends.

The phrase that comes to mind is "Just say No."

She's obviously never read any books about dancing.

She actually has read about dancing.
An obscure volume called "Everything You Need To Know About Dancing", by Elaine Benes.

I'm confused as to why she doesn't talk like a Canterlot pony.

She's the student of Celestia. You know, the one who invited the Mane 6 to the Galla just so they could ruin it?

I think she learned well.

Twilight of course saw that through. This is, how she took revenge.

The other four are Ponyville hicks. They have a certain, rustic charm but know nothing about high society. Twilight spent all her time in Canterlot in the library and only learned what friendship could be when she was dispatched to Ponyville to deal with the Second Nightmare Moon Revolt.

Everything she knows about social graces she learned from Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie. Celestia deliberately invited her and her friends to the GGG to ruin it. As far as Twilight knows? Her behavior was exemplary. But then again she runs to hug her sovereign instead of KNEELING BEFORE CELESTIA!

^ Okay, now I'm just picturing the high society reaction to Twilight rush-hugging Celestia. She appears. They all bow. Twilight rush-hugs. *It can't end well*

Big cities are complex. A city on the scale of New York or Paris is where you find wealthy socialites, but by sheer numbers there's no way such a city's entire population would consist only of wealthy socialites and their servants. Twilight is from the university part of town.

Wouldn't Twilight be more famous amongst the ponies of Canterlot not only for having Celestia as her protege but also having greet pretty much most of the classey ponies at the Grand Galloping Gala which Rarity mentioned was more important than the fancypants one she attended.
