Can I just ask what the name Caravel means? I mean I know the Captain's name is a reference to Mobey Dick. But I can't think what Caravel would mean.

Anon has it, Caravels were very old type of sailing ship, popular in the 15th/16th century. Columbus's ships for example were Caravels.

^I should say that Pinta and Niña were Caravels, Santa Maria was a Carrack
