This has always been legal in most of the world Europe, I don't see the problem. The US just gets rid of a stupid, old law. |

I could never eat horse meat. They're my second favorite animal, and consider I work with them and own some I personally find the idea especially sickening.
But yeah, in some cultures it is just as normal as us eating beef. |

@Saufsoldat: America also outlawed slavery before most of the world.
USA 1, World 0. |
| Anonymous #723529 7 months ago |
@Anonymous 468: You're kidding. You're kidding right? The USA didn't outlaw slavery until 1865.
By comparison: Cyrus the Great bans slavery in Persia - 550 B.C. Magna Carta signed, effectively abolishing slavering in English Law. - 1215 King Louis the tenth decrees any slave setting foot in France must be freed. - 1315 Peter the Great formally outlawed slaves in Russia in 1723 Even Mexico beat the USA to the punch, abolishing slavery in 1810 |
| Anonymous #723536 7 months ago |
@468 Crack a book. The USA was late to the abolition scene. It was one of the last countries where slavery was openly legal. Europe regarded it as a blight on our nation. |

Oh and if anyone had actually bothered to read the article they would have found out that before 2006, when an indirect ban was enacted, 138,000 horses per year were slaughtered for human consumption in the USA and that "It's a $65 million industry in America -- it was before it was banned," |

What 604 said.
I saw on the news about it last night, had humane societies are plenty of people who work with horses supporting it. Apparently, without a place to send them most people would just let old horses run wild or send them directly to humane shelters that are already short on resources. Both as you can imagine cause problems. I really don't get the big deal, how as soon as an animal lands on our pet list, we westerners refuse to look to them for meat as well. |

We should be allowed to eat dogs and cats too. It would really fix the overpopulation issue with the stray/feral groups.
Yes, I'm serious. |
| Dark_Horst #724122 7 months ago |
actually, horses are not pets. they are farm animals. cows are farm animals too. you eat cows. why not eat horses?
why someone wouldn't eat animals liek cats or dogs, i can understand. but horses? really, what's the problem? now go and try horse salami. tasty |
| Doctor_Whooves #724149 7 months ago |
People can eat what they like, of course; and objectively, eating meat from horses, dogs, cats, etc. isn't truly any different from eating cows, pigs, chicken, turkey, and so on. Nor is eating cockroaches, of course... but I think a lot of people would hesitate to do that, too... insects are a great source of protein, though.
However... personally... I feel free to indulge my (admittedly arbitrary) emotional attachment that elevates certain animal species over others as far as what I feel comfortable having slaughtered for my consumption. Animals such as horses, cats, and dogs have been domesticated for purposes which (usually) involve a great degree more close interaction between human and animal than those purposes for which we domesticated cows or pigs; and humans tend to get emotionally involved. So there are certain animals I simply won't ever eat, however legal it becomes. While it may be a bit irrational, the idea of doing so would be repugnant. |
| Xeneres #725660 7 months ago |
once again, people get mad for no reason. we dont make you do it, we just let those who want to do it. why does this remind me of the porn on this site... |
| Wheezie_Moonflower #726166 7 months ago |
Reminds me of this monologue bit:
"It's a tragedy people have to eat horses. They're beautiful animals. You ever take a peek at a cow or a pig? They're ugly. We're doing 'em a favor by eating 'em. Saves them the agony of looking at their reflections in the trough every morning. But a horse, that's a noble beast." |
| Anonymous #726248 7 months ago |
^ I subscribe to the "you are what you eat" theory of nutrition. So I have no problems with eating a noble beast. |
| Panzerpferd #727453 7 months ago |
^You are presumably human. "You are what you eat" is a silly rule that makes little sense both when taken literally and often figuratively. |
| Hazama #765244 7 months ago |
If we are what we eat, then I'm eating a goddamn pony. |
| Anonymous #765291 7 months ago |
If they were slaughtering FiM ponies, I would object. But these are non-sentient, primitive horses that are no different from cows or pigs, so I'm fine with that. |
| TheGlueFactory #775689 7 months ago |
Believe it or not some people keep pigs as pets. Also, if you live in the country-side as I do, I've had several deers (one at a time) as pets when I was a kid. We finally quit taking care of them because some assholes kept killing them despite the fact they had a red ribbon tied around their neck identifying them as a pet...caught one of the guys who killed the last one, and they just laughed, and said there was nothing wrong with what they did (never mind the thing was just starting to bud its horns at the time, and the others never even got that far).
I say all this because I care about the pet deers I had. Did that mean we kept hunting them for supper? No. To us, once a deer was kept as a pet, it was no longer a wild animal, and a as a result, was off the dinner menu (at least by us). So we continued to eat deers, bears, rabbit, squirrels, and what have you. To put it another way it's kind of like how I've own several cats and dog, and to this day, can't help, but wonder what they would taste like. Not really for major eatting, but more out of curiosity. As for horse meat? It's strange, different, and not something I consider food...but I must admit I'd give it a try if someone went through the trouble of preparing it for me. |

| Anonymous #910792 5 months ago |
There are a few things wrong with People being so nonchalant about this, for one thing, Horses are commonly treated with Medications that are dangerous to Humans. Furthermore, Horses should indeed be accorded a different status from Animals that are raised for food for a good reason. They literally helped us found civilization, more than any other Animal. They are far more useful dead than alive and with their capacity to form deep emotional bonds with us: Slaughtering them isn't really comparable to the slaughter and consumption of Animal's that are bred primarily for that purpose. It's more like Murdering a Friend who just helped you build a House. |
| Anonymous #910811 5 months ago |
"Far more useful Dead than Alive" Freudian slip there, I was thinking about the people who think it's okay. |
| Bernoullis_Principle #1026359 5 months ago |
What the article doesn't tell you is that horses have actually overpopulated in the western and mid-western parts of the US. I do hope this bill passes though. MLP is great and all, but I would be lying if I said that horse isn't one of the most delicious things I've ever eaten. Thank goodness for French cuisine. |
| Anonymous #1354569 2 months ago |
And then we're chinese |
| Anonymous #1368326 2 months ago |
Meh, wussies. Sausages (made out of horsemeat) are fucking delicious. Deal with it.
It's just hypocritical that you can eat one kind of animal without a problem, yet you can't do that to another... Even though I look forward to invent methods enabling us to eat meat while not massacring any animals... grow the raw meat like plants, or whatever. |
