I've always felt like Celestia's pranks were an attempt to "humanize" herself, so to speak, with the 'common pony'. To dissolve the barrier her size, nature, and immortality put between her and them. To evoke an honest smile, rather than a reverential one.
Celestia loyalist from day one. |
| VoidRaven #722923 7 months ago |
true, but her image is so hard corrupted that it need a big miracle to erase all bad things about her from internet and everyone minds to start creating her new image from beginning ;p

'Tis the price of fame and innocence, Princess.
On a related note, I propose a Celestial Fool's Day, on which the Princess may be the target of any harmless prank without consequence, with the twist being that Princess Celestia herself pulls a prank, setting the actual date of the holiday one day early to prove to her subjects that she isn't a mad dictator. |

What did you do?
You were too nice. There is a segment of the population who perceive everypony as bad deep down inside. That nopony can have truly good, honest intentions, or choose to do the right thing simply because it's the right thing. They do this as a coping mechanism: if they accept such negative traits as being the norm, they don't feel the need to overcome those negative traits in themselves. When someone who doesn't have such visible qualities, such as you, appears, they are made even more aware of their inadequacies, as well as having their cynical worldview shaken. They appeal to incredulity, insisting that you just CAN'T be as kind and virtuous as you appear. That you have to be hiding some dark secret. They will labor day and night to "expose" you, searching for something, anything they can use to paint you as an evil, sadistic tyrant. And if they can't find anything, they'll just make it up. |

You did nothing wrong Celly, we know you nice and love and care for your sister. I hate the fandom for what they have done to Luna and Celestia. Celestia is not a sex crease, tyrant monster, and Luna is not a poor hapless victim who is socially awkward. They are both equals in every way just how Faust meant them to be. |
| Anonymous #723530 7 months ago |
Well, Luna's still a little socially awkward, but at least it's a lack of practice not being a shouting warrior-goddess rather than crying over a birthday party. |

Celestia is a self-sacrificing sun goddess that was able to deal with exiling her sister -and only friend- to a hellish, lifeless wasteland to prevent the world from freezing to death. This would come at the price of learning much later that she could have just expelled Nightmare Moon from Luna's body with the Elements instead of banishing her.
With nopony to support her, she took a struggling country and successfully nurtured a burgeoning, peaceful empire of one-thousand years and counting. Her rule is fair and just, and Equestria is a beacon of hope and progress to the world. She gives everything she has and asks for nothing in return. There is barely a servant to her name in the royal palace, if Celestia needs something she will get it herself. She expects nothing but loyalty and a little understanding. Instead, what does she get? In fanon and shit, wow, even in canon, she is feared by her subjects. The most benevolent deity on high, feared by the people she loves and would happily die for. She is seen as less of a fellow pony and more as an object of power to be feared and respected. Regardless of her attempts at lightening the mood, she is seen as cruel, taking delight in the frustration of others. God forbid she test someone's mettle with a harmless prank or adventure. And the worst part is... The one pony that Celestia may love even more than her sister, her beloved protege Twilight Sparkle, is so terrified by her mentor that the mere prospect of "disappointing" the princess invokes fears of death and worse. I'd say the lady deserves a little fucking respect. |
| Anonymous #724523 7 months ago |
The thing is it probably wasn't her decision to actually banish her. Just to use the elements. |
| Anonymous #724564 7 months ago |
But see, look at it like this. When Celestia used the Elements to combat NMM, she ended up locking her only friend away in the depths of space on an uninhabited rock for a full millennium, a prisoner trapped within her own body. One thousand years later, NMM returns, only to be successfully expelled by six rookie mares using the true power of the Elements: Friendship.
So because nobody ever really liked Celestia or wanted to get to know her, Celestia failed her sister. Because she didn't have any friends. Undoubtedly, she'd see this as a personal fault. "Congratulations, Celestia. Your sister suffered for a thousand years and your people fear you as a result, because nobody ever loved you. Except your possessed sister, who you banished to the moon as a result of your incompetence." Imagine living with that. Forever. |

| Anonymous #724658 7 months ago |
^I think that's the point # 97/64 was trying to make. It's not even just fanon, everyone is terrified of Celestia in spite of her (incredibly obvious) good intentions. She tricked a couple running a bakery into overfilling her cup of tea for the sake of lightening the mood, and everypony acts like Jesus just got punched in the face. |

| Kein #724958 7 months ago |
> So because nobody ever really liked Celestia or wanted to get to know her, Celestia failed her sister.
Not really. If you remember s02 ep01-02, Sisters together were able to form Harmony and use power of Elements to imprison Discord. There was connection between them (sisterly love), and the origins of this connection is similar to the one between mane six - friendship. pure and untainted, this is what wakes up the Elements and from Harmony. When Luna let the bitterness and "evil powers" slip into her heart, this connection was broken and despite the fact that Celestia herself can represent all 6 Elements and all its traits, she wasn't able to use full potential of the EoH. That's why banishment happened. But her sister actually loved her. @724497 Stop expressin my opinion for me, anon. (I lied, I love you) |
| Anonymous #724980 7 months ago |
#724497
I remember once, when I was a kid, I didn't do my homework for school. Same old, same old, I was always forgetting. Only this time, I was getting a note sent home to my parents. I nearly burst into tears and begged the teacher not to do it. Years later, I discovered I landed my parents into a spot of trouble, since judging from my reaction, I was clearly fearful of them and something bad was going on in my household. Except that couldn't be further from the truth. Was it really so alien to believe that I had such love and respect for my parents, I couldn't bear the thought of them looking at me with disappointment in their eyes? Trust and respect does exist in this world. Twilight doesn't fear Celestia, she respects her. She respects her so much, holds her in such high regard that the mere prospect of disappointing her does not merit consideration. |
| TheLoneLampman #725409 7 months ago |
What is this 'fun' thou speakest of? |
| Anonymous #725452 7 months ago |
#980 has a point.
But I think he was referring to the fact that Twilight holds the same ridiculous beliefs about Celestia as everyone else. Everyone seems to think that if you anger the Regent of the Sun, you'll disappear into a dungeon or the moon and never return. Which is ridiculous, I'm pretty sure the mere thought would mortify Celestia. It was bad enough when she banished Luna. It's irrational fear, almost similar to the rumors about Zecora from that one episode, to the point where I'm surprised there hasn't been a Celestia-centric episode yet. I have a hard time believing that the Princess handles all of this in perfect stride. |
| Kein #725587 7 months ago |

While I agree that anon #724497 kind of overdid with statements regarding how Celestia being portrayed and threatened in canon (it never was shown that ponies afraid of her or worship hardly; sure they do respect her, as much as ready to bow before her -- she is the one who rises the sun after all --, but afraid or hate? Nah. In fact, we saw only signs of love and respect to her in the show), he has a point: Twi, the one who spent biggest part of her life near to Princess, supposed to know the latter better than anyone else. She knows -- or supposed to -- how benevolent and good/kind and all-forgiving she is and yet she is the only one who freaks out when things becomes icky. "Bird in the Hoof" as an example: remember what the assumption Twi came up with when she realized that it was Fluttershy who stole the bird? She thought that Princess will lock the pegsus in the dungeon but even Fluttershy (a pony, who spent her live in Ponyville and, probably, saw Princess only from far away during some events) doubted her words. It looks like common portrayal of the Princess in pony society is the one that viewer supposed to get while watching the show: kind, benevolent ruler who is actually quite casual (participiating at tea-party in some provincial village?) and does not harm or threat her subjects with intimidations like imprisoning or such. And yet Twi's assumptions is kind of weird. Same applies to "Swarm of the Century": in Twi's crazy imagination the parasprite were an actual hazard for Princess while it is quite doubtful for everyone else. Lesson Zero played a bit different, but correlating idea. Twilight actually was freaking out for no apparent reason and no "fear of disappoinmnet" can justify what she did. That was an actual "wrongdoing" of her in this case and love-spell made it even worse. Celestia had every reason to be angry and disappointed at her and not even because of the mess she did but rather WHY she did it. Her own personal student failed and this is could be her fault as well. Yet, when those two were alone - did she punished her for what Twi did? Nope, she was about to forgive her because she understands her student (something, that Twilight, for some reason, does not regarding the Princess) and why Twilight did what she did. Of course she serioused the f*ck up when public appeared, she is still a Princess and should act as one to keep the status but we all aware about real situation and her relation regading it. It is kind of sad that no one, except, probably, Luna, can see real Princess as she no matter how she tries to be the actual herself. One of the reason why I comissioned this --- From general point of view on how the cartoon's scenario works (read: common tropes and themes) I can see why writers played this line and why especially with Twilight - in case with her it works much more effective, besides, according to Amy, writers often had NO idea what others had in mind for their premises of their episodes. But that's kind of offtopic, we are talking about her fanon portrayal that is WAy to far from the show-wise one and has no |

I think we should chalk it up to Celestia being horribly misunderstood by even those closest to her, and she really just needs a friend or two, or at least someone who understands her that isn't her sister (there's probably still tension there anyways). Even though she'll outlive all of her potential friends anyways.

not related to topic, just slipped from the tongue. @#725663 Fun thing is that consider the last canon portrayal of her immortal sister Luna in ep04... I guess that assumed sweet and sensual relationships between Sisters is now under a quite high degree of a doubt. Which is a bit sad as well >_> |

| Kein #725829 7 months ago |
Uhhh... english isn't my native language so, sometimes it is quite hard for me to explain what I mean. Lemme try again with some examples, I hope I won't fail this time.
A follow-up to the subj #725663 mentioned in his post about Luna: >someone who understands her that isn't her sister If you take a look at most of the fanart that was produced after ep01-02 of s01 you will notice similar pattern that fans played in the art with Celestia/Luna: a very close sisters that love and understand each other much but just made some silly mistakes. This was a fanon portrayal of relationships between Royal Sisters and despite the fact it was born just from a 10sec dramatic cutscene of ep02 it has its place and makes sense (or, rather, did). Well-known examples: >>19424 >>23809 But e04 and canon character of Luna quite much shattered to dust such assumptions, Luna was portrayed as real, regal pony, self-confident and quite aware of her status. And she didn't doubt to use it or her powers. Basically, she is what Celestia supposed to be (except the latter is not) or how some fans see her (despite the fact there is no evidence unlike with Luna). So, what I meant is that consider new Luna's portrait it is quite doubtful that even Luna now can be someone who would understand Celestia (even tho they share the same place and status) in the context of a topic we discuss here. Ehh... still not sure if the point is clear but whatever, not really important. Added discussion tag. |
