| ThePowerofANON #722704 7 months ago |
@geacu Is it because your system can't support codecs it doesn't recognize? I suggest install Media Player Codec Pack. |
| Anonymous #722719 7 months ago |
Or the Combined Community Codec Pack |

>codec packs
>2011 Guys, guys. Just use VLC, Media Player Classic or even mplayer. No need to mess with codec packs anymore. If those three won't play something, then nothing will. |

vlc is an abomination. just install cccp. |
| geacu #722765 7 months ago |
i cant use anything that id have to buy |

^ They're all free. |
| Anonymous #722787 7 months ago |
As said earlier, if vlc, mplayer or mpc won't play something, then find a properly encoded file that plays. Most of the time those "extra codecs" that some files want are actually malware, so don't download them. |
| geacu #722788 7 months ago |
then would you mind providing me a link for one of them? |

The DMCA is ridiculous and unconstitutional, and it need to be abolished by new, uncorrupted representatives who don't have Hollywood execs sucking on their cocks. You can get anything banned from Youtube without even proving that you own it. Right now, I can go to any My Little Pony video on Youtube, essentially type in "I am Hasbro, and I own this. I don't want it on Youtube," and legally Youtube is required to take it down without even making me prove I own it. The DMCA is tyranny, and we need to end it. |

I don't see why people hate VLC. It plays every file worth using, so it does the job just fine. What, are you expecting it to tell your future? |

The VLC hate stems from its historical inability to render software subtitles correctly, earning it ire from the anime fansubbing scene. VLC did not actually properly process styled softsubs and just splurged them out as a subtitle, which could make some releases unwatchable because they were covered in instruction tags. ggkthx famously had one Code Geass release where they padded every line of dialogue with a comment tag that said "VLC SUCKS WHY ARE YOU STILL USING" a few dozen times - every proper renderer ignored the comment as it was supposed to. Obviously VLC didn't. I don't know if VLC's subtitle rendering has been updated since those days or not.
Also because it used internal decoders you could not make VLC use a more efficient H264 decoder such as CoreAVC, and this was a serious problem for people on older machines trying to watch intensive high-definition encodes. For example, I can't play 1080p H264 encodes on my machine without using CoreAVC - the decoders in libavc just aren't fast enough on my processor to keep up. Basically, a lot of people got their introduction to caring about media players during a time when VLC was genuinely bad at what you needed it to do. It's probably better these days, but then the alternatives we used back then are still fine now, so there's been no incentive to change or find out if VLC got any better. |

I generally like VLC over MPC. But when I play the ponyarchive's 1080p files on my laptop VLC tends to lag a lot but MPC plays smoothly. Some efficiency problem or something like ^Carcer said? |
