I don't particularly hate Nyx... I'm just horribly biased against characters who are little more than 'victims' in stories. The ONLY fanfiction I've read is pony fan-fiction and already I think there's too much of that...
You know what? Lets just avoid the shitstorm and turn it into something nice... like a place where people post oc character fanfic who go off the beaten path (E.g the protagonist is a villain) Anyway, as bronies you should all know better... hating something just makes it... [bold]STRONGER.[bold] |

As a kid I always heard the saying "Everyone's a critic" I didn't really knew what it mean back then, but I think this picture pretty much sums it up. It's easy to criticize something without really saying how it could be better, or putting forth anything original yourself, huh. |

Like the word "socialist" in politics, the phrase "mary sue" is quickly becoming meaningless. People use it for any OC they dislike, when not even all objectively bad OCs qualify as Sues. By the standards that Nyx is judged, most of the mane six (special mention to Twilight and Rainbow Dash) qualify as Mary Sues. |

That was sort of an automatic when she was Nightmare Moon reborn
Though it was expanded when she could actually easily defeat Celestia and Luna AND send them to their respective heavenly spheres afterwards in less than a weeks time...that right there is what broke the fic for me since that apparently takes a whole lot of magic to do |

Disagree on all counts. The story fails to be wonderful BECAUSE she is neither adorable nor interesting. An Alicorn OC with only Moé-style flaws who is liked by everypony (and the few who don't like her are lambasted for it) and more powerful than goddesses is not exactly gripping design. ...In a story that is 400 pages too long for the story it tells. |

Like the word socialist in politics, people who get defensive about mary sues like to throw the "you don't even know what that means" argument around. It's simple; a mary sue is a character, usually a protagonist, commonly a self-insert, whose sole purpose is to be likeable and faultless. It is a masturbatory character the author is too inordinately proud of to give any real flaws or conflicts. Rather than driving the story themselves, the story exists just to showcase the character. It's not just some generic insult; it's a criticism. |
