long long time ago humans used to be just meat eaters :O then we learned to gather and farm things :O and widened our appetite , why would it be any different for ponies if they are the dominate race :X with society comes change and experimentation which leads to massive changes in life style and diet :O |

^^Actually our african ancestors mostly ate roots, berries, vegetables and fruits. They did indeed eat meat if they could get their hands on some, but it was scarce since they didn't actively hunt. Then some smart monkey-man discovered that rocks hurt and they could be used to bludgeon something to death.
After that there where some shenanigans, like more sophisticated weapons (sharp rocks tied to STICKS!), increased size of brain due to protein from the meat, fire etc. |

@anon 100 Maybe the ham sandwich is an exotic food item from a country that has beings that do eat meat. So the ponies make a meat simulate so they can enjoy some foreign cuisine.
@anon 863 Eggs are protein, but as long as their unfertilized, they're not technically meat. The egg is just full of nutrients for the baby chick that never was. |

Back to the original pic: equines aren't necessarily obligate herbivores. They can eat small amounts of meat just fine. |
