Sopa will bring the end of the world, I called it.
The internet breaks down, global communcation dies of, we draw digital borders into the internet, there's censorship everywhere.
What a nice dystopia.

@ryebread: then hundreds of serves would be rehosted to another country, USA would lost the dominance of the internet, like when they lost the dominance of the videogames market after the 1983

Did SOPA get approved or something?
I find it unlikely based off of the amount of people causing a shit storm about this (including myself).

SOPA is the godawful version, but what we should be worried about is if the Senate passes PROTECT IP and the House passes a version of that.

I can't believe that politicians are still stupid enough to propose this. Way to make people on both the right and left hate your fucking guts.

The fact that Ron Paul and Nancy Pelosi can agree that it's stupid, the witnesses in favor admit they have no idea what its impact will be on internet security, and it's still on the table is kind of a testament to just how deeply Congress is in lobbyists' pockets.

It ain't the lobbyists.
It's the congressmen.
For decades, politicians have gone to Washington to get rich off of graft, corruption, and sweetheart deals. Thanks to their own legislation, it's perfectly legal for them to engage in financial transactions--- insider trading is just the start--- that would get the rest of us thrown in jail till we were old and grey.
And any business or corporation who doesn't grease the skids for them becomes the target of the next congressional inquest (see Bill Gates circa 1990s. Seems he didn't hand out enough candy to Clinton and co.....)

This law keeps cropping up for two reasons:
1)A free internet is a deadly threat to corrupt politicians
2)several corrupt politicians somewhere aim to get rich off it.

What I'd like to know, and I admit I haven't read much on the bills in question, is who would report infringing materials? If anyone can report then I can see some epic trolling occuring

not as unlikely as it should be. Didn't the last vote come out 52 against and 46 for or something?

Just a hearing. And it doesn't seem like even Google can exercise enough muscle to stop them.

I came across an article which kind of gave me hope. If this causes international harm, perhaps it might force this bill to give? I dunno. It's kind of remote.

Even if we fail (and I'm getting an ever-looming sense of dread that we will), is there something we could do, someplace we could go? We need a contingency.

It's times like this I wish things like Freenet or Netsukuku were feasible, viable alternatives.

And I can't help but feel that this just might make some heads roll, one way or the other.
