It's a refrence to The Black Plague (the one that actually happened in Europe).
The 'doctors' of that era belived that 'foul fumes' were the cause and spread of the plague, so they'd wear those bird-masks, which were stuffed full of flowers and stuff, because they thought sweet-smelling things would protect them. At most, it might've done a little as a face mask, but that's about it. |
