last time i checked, most of the congress admitted that they don't have idea of how the SOPA would affect the internet, BTW, was aprove or not? |
| Gittonsxv #689776 8 months ago |
if SOPA gets passed then there will be shit from like 70% of the internet..... |
| Glord #689778 8 months ago |
Really and truly?
I hope it passes. This retarded shit is grounds enough for revolution. Glorious. Revolution. Down with the government! |
| Anonymous #689780 8 months ago |
SOPA can't pass.
Nerds from all around the country will be raped at jails. :O |

I think this is referring to the part of the SOPA bill that says that all Bronies will be arrested, stripped of their friendship and thrown into the incinerator. |

This isn't hyperbole.
There are provisions in this sack of shit to turn copyright infringement into a federal crime. Did you download/seed any MLP episodes, stream them, or upload them to Youtube? Don't drop the soap. |

#689823, Hasbro is cool with it, yo. |

doesn't matter if the copyright holder is cool with it or not if this passes. |

Oh, well. Incinerator then. |

It's great to see everyone in a eager mood to spill blood. Love and tolerance~!
Seriously, I don't support the law, not in the least. I have plans to gain revenue from the internet. But - and this is me playing devil's advocate, a bit - this should be something of a wait-and-see situation. We've got Google, of all companies, on our side, and many, many lesser ones. Obama has threatened to veto it, at least. The hearing wasn't a landslide, but we have the upper hand, still, in Congress. I'm not so sure they'll take this lying down - but then again, I'm hoping for something against precedent. And even then, we can't just declare THE GLORIOUS INTERNET REVOLUTIONwhen the ink's fresh on the bill. We should wait - and it wouldn't take long, I imagine - for them to step on a particularly sensitive spot, lest we look like a bunch of posturing knee-jerk reactionaries. Wait until they close down a whole bunch of Facebook accounts, yank off 75% of Youtube videos, close down the Ask Pony tumblrs and threaten Ponibooru, threaten sites like deviantArt, furaffinity, etc.. That's when we should definitely strike back in some form or fashion. They're likely underestimating how deeply rooted we are into the internet. Even if they affect the mainstream internet, even if our revolution fails, we'll find another way. People always do. |
| AdrianBrony #689869 8 months ago |
glord, you have been watching V for Vendetta way too much if you actually look forward to a revolution.
plus, what yould you do after tearing it down. you now have the third largest country on earth, and millions of people, and you have just torn down their structure. unless you have something already agreed upon to replace it, you will just make everything worse. |

The other point I wanted to make is that there is a difference between a law being on the books and a law being enforced. If TVTropes is to be believed, there are at least three seperate laws that forbid competition from pricing their products lower, higher, or even equal to a certain product. The only thing that keeps capitalism afloat is the fact that these laws are enforced selectively.
Even if that's not a good example, I still think the main point holds true. Let's wait for the law to actually be enforced in some truly draconian manner and win. The potential is definitely there, let's wait for it to become reality, and have a good example of how awful the law is. |
| liquidXTC #689906 8 months ago |
Obama said he'd veto it, yeah. There are a lot of things that he said he'd do... And I'm strongly against just waiting. The longer it is in action the more people will get used to it. |
| noonemusteverknow #689929 8 months ago |
In the extremely unlikely to impossible situation that Obama did in fact stamp that bill with a logo of Pinkie Pie with the text "VETO'd in the name of Friendship" surrounding it, I'd vote him emperor. ...just sayin. |
| dudemang #689947 8 months ago |
liquidXTC said: I suppose it's truly undeserved optimism, but hey, it doesn't really hurt, I guess. liquidXTC said: Well, two things. A.) I'm only suggesting waiting as opposed to just grabbing the pitchforks and torches at the first wind of Obama signing the bill. We'd only be making an example out of ourselves if the bill hasn't actually forced anyone to do anything - just a bunch of violent impulsive internet-lovers. It's a matter of image. We have a great deal of reasonable speculation as to what this bill will do, but no concrete proof of any injury it has done. We can't build cases off of that. (At least, that's how I see it. Perhaps movements in the past have succeeded otherwise?) B) How would people get "used" to it? If the extent of this bill is what we think it is, it will step on a lot of toes and make a great deal of people VERY unhappy. |
| Anonymous #689961 8 months ago |
The same way we got "used" to DMCA.
Which is a shit law, but nowhere near as bad as this thing. |

What about you guys? Do you like art? |
| dudemang #689973 8 months ago |
^^ I though DMCA was basically dead since all the big stores went DRM-free. |
| liquidXTC #689985 8 months ago |
To A: Well, I'd assume that most people are against the bill so doing something asap would just make a good image. If we don't have a majority behind us it's no use anyway. In that case, screw this, I'm outta here.
To B: Getting used to as in accepting their fate. Have you read 1984? The problem of governments is, that they won't suddenly say "Hey, we're a dictatorship now, OBEY" but do it bill by bill, year by year. So people will be annoyed but never annoyed to actually do something about this. It starts like SOPA and then you have to censor government critical sites, too as they lead to terrorism and the next bill will introduce that all sites have to be conformed by the government and so on and so on. SOPA is just strong enough to actually make people lift their asses and do something against all this. Or so I hope. Yeah, I can see where you're coming from with that, but this bill just seems to be too big and too pervasive to be a gradual thing. They have, in fact, been trying to do stuff like this for quite a while now, and each time it's been shot down.
I dunno. At this point in time, this is how I feel about it. I'm too caught up in other pursuits and too indifferent politically. I'll have to bone up on a couple of things. And... "A witty saying proves nothing." ~ Voltaire |

Let's hear it for common sense. And yeah, I'm one of the few "I agree piracy should be stopped but not with the whole kill-fly-with-nuclear-rainboom method" types. So there. |
| wolfnanaki #690103 8 months ago |
Obama's already said he'll kill any bill that violates Net Neutrality, and this bill is basically taking a huge shit on Net Neutrality. So basically, if this bill even makes it to Obama's desk, it's going in the shredder. |

I have never watched V For Vendetta.
And it's called chaos. Good pure old fashioned chaos. We shall it back and watch the country burn, and when they look up and say "Help us" we will look down and whisper "Fuck off". Now if you will excuse me I have my new Zelda game to play. |

how about we take the internet... AND MOVE IT TO EUROPE! |

@dudemang
DRM is actually very common. It is most noticible in DVDs, where, with a few education-related exceptions it is de facto illegal to watch DVDs on a Linux-based operating system (keep in mind, that Windows is nearly a monopoly and Apple has most of the rest, Linux distributions being the only free alternative and the only alternative with large user bases.) Right now DRM is fading a lot, but it is a major pain in the ass that might never fully die. Until circumventing DRM for non-infringing purposes is completely legalized, the DMCA will continue to be a giant stain on the United States' treatment of copyright and technology. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Library of Congress used the loophole of making a broad exception to all non-infringing purposes. It will be too long before Congress itself admits that the DMCA is shit. |
| Nebbie #691274 8 months ago |
only free alternative with a large user base*
stupid changes of scope without proper rewording |
| Anonymous #691823 8 months ago |
^^ They would never do that because the crooked corporate lobbyists shoving money into their pockets with the Bush-packed Supreme Court's blessing will keep bringing shit like this up year after year until congress just shrugs their shoulders and passes it. Everybody thought that anime ban in Tokyo would never pass, right? |

I have only one thing to say:
Watch V for Vendetta. Take notes. |
