This is my analisys about what their canon sexual orientation are:
I myself am not sure why, it's just a feeling that I have. It kind of seems fit that the shy, no self-esteem mare is gay, as it could be one more thing than makes she feel displaced.
Dash is always focused in joining the Wonderbolts, so she probably has no time nor interest in searching romance, but if she did fall in love, I believe that she could end up with a pony of any gender. The same goes for AJ, but I think she's more likely to for a mare than a stallion.
Pinkie is probably bissexual, and may not even realize that oposite genders are suposed to be the norm.
Twilight, always trying to discover new things, would be at least bi-curious, wanting to have a relationship with a mare at least once, to see what it's like.
Rarity is the only who I see as totally straight, probably due to her fantasies with Blueblood.
This is my analisys about what their canon sexual orientation are. Honestly, I wouldn't mind all of them being filly-foolers, but it would be nearly impossible.

I see, it's refreshing to see someone who at least tries to use canon to support their theories. Much better than the "They're gay because I said so and lesbians are hot" mentality.

When I'm not shipping the characters, and instead just theorising on the characters based on canon, I think my opinion is about the same as yours. Though with some differences.

I think AJ is likely to be searching for a male partner, due to her being one to uphold traditions and her strong family values, so it seems more logical, in her mind at least, that she should also be straight. Whether she is straight or not, is something that I find too difficult to speculate. This is another reason why Applejack needs her own episode. Until I can find something that can suggest otherwise, she's straight to me.

Dash, like you said, is too focused on her dreams to consider what her ideal partner would be. Again, my stance falls on her being straight due to there being nothing to suggest otherwise. Yes, she's tomboyish, but so is AJ, so being a tomboy isn't an indicator (I also knew a girl IRL who was a tomboy, but was straight [at least to the best of my knowledge]). Beyond her tomboyish style, there's not a shred of evidence that could suggest her orientation not being straight.

I agree completely on Pinkie, she's not one to recognise social norms, and her personality and the way she treats every character the same as the last suggests she doesn't see a real difference between genders (Though she treats Fluttershy slightly differently, who is 'off limits' when it comes to some of Pinkie's typical interactions, which says to me that Pinkie really upset Flutter in the past accidentally, and is something that Pinkie doesn't want to happen again).

I too think Twilight would be bi-curious, whether she'd become bi, gay, or straight after adequate experimentation is, again, something I find too difficult to speculate. With the occasional exception (such as physics-breaking Pinkie, though she's got used to accepting that), Twilight is a very flexible character, and is open to new ideas.

Rarity is straight. I simply cannot see her being any other way within canon. If anything did occur between her and another mare, it would lead to regret.

And finally, Fluttershy, I can see your reasoning, in that she's possibly shy because she's afraid of revealing that she is gay (on top of her many other weaknesses and fears). For me, it's a toughie. On the one hand, she's the closest to nature out of her friends, so she definitely knows that opposite-gender couples are what brings the future generation. She also behaves much like a mother to her pet, Angel, which says to me that she intends to become a real mother one day. But on the other hand, she could be acting out the role of mother out of instinct and/or because she doesn't see herself bearing her own children, and she could understand and accept that same-sex couples are not intended by nature, but exist because it is an option - and one she has chosen.

Fluttershy is the toughest one, and I don't want to cop-out after so much analysis with "straight until suggested otherwise". But that's what I default to.

It seems like we both separate canon from shipping. As I said, I believe that Rarity is straight, but it does not stop me from shipping her with other mares.

AJ was the one I had the most trouble classifying. Due to her tomboyish, strong nature, I have a bit of trouble picturing her with most stallions, unless it was somepony like Caramel, for example. In other word, I consider her too proud to have a relationship with a typical stallion. I'm sorry if I sounded a bit sexist, it was not the intention. You made a really good point, one that I considered myself before, and that I plan to use on a future fic. Considering how important family is to her, I can imagine she wanting to be a mother in order to help the apple family bloodline to survive.

I can't argue with your opinion on Dash. You made a good point, and I base her bissexuality more on the feeling she pass me rather than solid arguments.

I wouldn't say with 100% certainty that Rarity would regret having something with a mare, but she would most likely want to keep it a secret.

I don't know how you approach shipping, but my way is to basically isolate each ship from the other unless the art is calling upon them. So one story is completely irrelevant to another - unless they are explicitly stated to be related - for example. This keeps me away from silly arguments over the 'best ships' and the like because I, in effect, "ship 'em all".

You don't seem sexist to me in your opinion of AJ, but I'm male (if that makes any difference). I take it you're saying that AJ sees herself as an important member of the Apple Clan, and she most likely is considering how much she actually does for not only her direct family, but for her relatives, and of course the business. So if she were to fall in love, it would be with somepony who can 'keep up' with her. A pony who doesn't respect AJ's ethics, or doesn't support her in her work is certainly not going to be a pony she would get along with. That being said, it is quite true in real life that there is no fun in finding someone exactly like oneself, and I'd say the same would apply to AJ, too. If AJ and her hypothetical love interest always agreed with eachother, then the relationship would get stale - it just happens. Drawing from shipfics as an example, this is probably the number one reason why AppleDash exists. Dash and AJ both have that sort of 'keep up' requirement, though in different fields. They also share a similar dedication to the task at hand. However, Dash is lazy while AJ is not, and AJ is responsible while Dash is not. In canon, this makes them friends who'll never 100% agree with each other, but will always find that common ground that makes them good friends. And in shipfics, this gives a glimpse at the sort of love interest AJ could have.

However, like in my previous comment, the gender of her hypothetical partner is likely to be male. There just isn't anything in canon that says otherwise that I think is good enough to support the theory that she isn't straight.

Why does one keep secrets if there isn't any regret, or chance of regret, hanging over it? The level of regret is what is debatable. Perhaps it could be a deep regret that makes her feel 'dirty', or maybe it is a regret more along the lines of "it happened, can't change that, but that doesn't mean I have to relive it". But I digress, such theories go far beyond the scope of speculating the Mane Six's individual sexualities within show canon.

This is pretty much how I ship. I used to only like a single ship per character, but ever since I became a brony, I learnt that I can ship one single character with many others and how to apreciate each of the possible combinations separately.

My theory for AJ was that some ponies would not only keep up with her, but surpass her, and AJ, being the tough, reliable and responsible pony that she is, would want to be with a pony that she could protect and take care of, so she would be more likely to fall for a mare or a 'weaker' stallion like Caramel, as they would be more likely to instigate her caring side and wouldn't threaten her pride. I like Appledash and have read a lot of fics where ideas similars to your were used, but somehow it never crossed my mind as a indicative of her being straight in the canon, despite it making perfect sense.

A lot of gay people stay closeted for a long time due to fear of repression and what others will think. To a pony like Rarity, who wishes to be a famous fashion designer and always strive to be loved and make a good impression, public opinion means a lot. And since she's probably straight and would most likely never have anything with a mare again, all the fuss and hate she would receive would bring only harm, so she would want keep it a secret even if she didn't regreted it.

My (BitTune's) own theories:

Fluttershy probably likes mares more. Stallions probably intimidate her, usually. Perhaps she might like Big Mac, though, seeing as he's "very gentle". I've been toying with an idea that she's had a crush on Rarity for a while, but she's never acted on it because she knows (or at least she thinks) that Rarity's only interested in stallions.

Dash is bi, but again, she's not really currently interested in having relationships.

Pinkie Pie is pansexual--she doesn't care about gender.

Rarity is at least mostly straight.

AJ...is too busy with Sweet Apple Acres to really consider a relationship.

Twilight is a virgin, most definitely. XD
She hasn't ever had any sort of relationship like that. Maybe she is bicurious, like some of you said. I really haven't thought about her all that much.

And, as a bonus, Derpy is a panromantic asexual. She doesn't like sex in the same way that some ponies don't like raisins. This probably comes from the way I see her, being very in touch with "the filly inside". If Dinky and/or Sparkler are biologically related to her, it was because she wanted to have them.

Pretty much exactly what I think.
It's hard to say which of them are virgins or not, but yeah, Twilight is without a doubt virgin.
As for Derpy, I never heard of panromantic asexual before, but it makes perfect sense! Confound these complicated sexual identities.

Judging by your thoughts on AJ, I'm going to hazard a guess that when it comes to lesbian ships, AppleShy is one that you personally like, yes? Because what you described is what many shippers say when asked to describe their reasons for supporting that ship.

Anyway, I can see where you're coming from. A hypothetical partner that could suit AJ would be one that doesn't threaten to tread on her hooves, so to speak, by possibly being better at doing what she does for a career. A humourous example I can think of when Big Mac tries to discourage AJ from taking one the task of harvesting all of the apple trees alone, citing that the sheer number of trees is too great. Applejack, thinking Big Mac is trying tell her how to do her own job, snaps at him with "Don't use your fancy mathematics to muddy the issue!". She's not snapping at the use of mathematics, but because Mac is suggesting that she isn't as efficient as she thinks she is, it appears to her like a swipe at her pride. Of course, she was too stubborn to realise that Big Mac had a valid point, not until she had seen for herself that she needed help.

If AJ found somepony who didn't threaten to best her at own game, then a lot of potential conflict would be averted. It can be argued that that would also mean things would get stale, but providing that that somepony had something interesting to them, the relationship can still work. To use your Caramel/AJ ship as an example, since Caramel is a BG character, very little is actually known about him beyond him appearing to also work at Sweet Apple Acres on occasion. For such a pairing to work, Caramel would have to have more to him than just being a ranch-hand (or ranch-hoof). Because both of them would know how eachother's day went because they would've been in the same place. Basically, Caramel would need another part of his life that doesn't involve working at Sweet Apple Acres, it could be anything from being a part-time employee at Sugarcube Corner, to a professional wrestler (for the sake of humour). The point is, a really good, lasting relationship needs both partners to not be able to guess the other's day right down to what they had for lunch.

I think I've strayed far from the original topic (Mane Six sexualities based on interpretations of canon) to something completely different (the many different ships of AJ and how they can each work - a strictly fanon subject), but it's all in the name of fun, is it not?

As for Rarity, I doubt she would be closeted. While she can cope with stress very well, she needs to release it often (probably why she enjoys visits to the spa, the kind and caring Fluttershy joining her on such breaks is a big bonus I would expect), and I think the stress of keeping something like her sexuality secret, and the pressure surrounding what could happen to her and her reputation in the fashion world if it was revealed, would eat away at her too much.

I think I've rambled enough in this particular comment, I'm beginning to get a bit self-conscious of this stuff - I can hear people saying "Forever Alone DOT jaypeg" haha

Yeah, I loved AppleShy way before I got into AppleDash. Unfortunatelly, I haven't see much new material of it during the last few months, while AppleDash continues one of the most popular ships, so right now I have been more into AppleDash than Appleshy.

This is exactly what I meant. A mare would be far less likely to trample her pride than a stallion. If AJ ended up with a strong stallion, it would start as a rough relationship with a lot of conflicts, but it could end up all right in the end. I myself don't ship AJ with Caramel, but I can see it working, and Caramel fits in my theory, but you made a good point, it would be boring if Caramel doesn't have a live outside the farm.

It's true that Rarity would have a hard time keeping the secret, but Fluttershy could be her confident. It would certainly allow her to keep the stress under control and help to avoid that her secret spreads even further.

I think that we were talking about their canon sexuality, but we must have slipped into personal expactations at some point. I think that forever alone part applies to me. It's funny, I have never been in a relationship before, but here I am, discussing possible lesbian couples of cartoon ponies on the internet. This whole thing is weird, but I, for one, believe that being normal is boring.

I've had the good grace of being in a couple of good relationships, even the bonus of not running the risk of dying a virgin, but compared to my peers, it took me long enough.

Long story short; I've spent more time observing other people's relationships than actually being in my own, and I've had a very long time between each of my own relationships to think about what went wrong, why it went wrong, and how to keep it from happening again. Basically, I've already over-analysed my real life, it's time to over-analyse something fictional.

I like your thinking with Fluttershy being Rarity's confident. It's hardly a stretch of the imagination to consider that Fluttershy would know all of Rarity secrets. Fluttershy appears to be the kind of character who doesn't judge others, and always tries to help. Her tendency to be quiet also means she can keep secrets very well - though there is a point where a secret becomes too much for her as shown in "Green Isn't Your Colour". In that episode, Fluttershy tried to keep her disdain for modelling secret so that she can make Rarity happy, but the stress of the job and how it puts her in front of the spotlight where she doesn't want to be all piles up into huge frustration. So, she probably does keep a few secrets on the behalf of her friends, but when they start to become a problem and disrupt her own life, she starts to buckle. It's fair enough really, nobody wants to have to plan their daily routine around keeping a secret safe, hell, that's why I avoid having too many secrets of my own!

Anyway, I don't think gender plays too significant a role in an ideal AJ ship, female or male, anypony can trample on AJ's pride if they have the lifestyle that rivals AJ's. It's more a case of personality and background than anything. An equally confident and hard-working stallion can be suitable for AJ, same as a more reserved and laid-back stallion can be suitable, too. The same goes for lesbian ships. It's down to who that hypothetical partner is that makes or breaks the relationship (and to some extent, which direction the writer is taking the story if it's a fan fic).

If there's one thing that can be learned from the actual show and immediately witnessed in real life, it is the fact the friendships can and do exist between the most unlikeliest of people. The Mane Six all have their individual strengths and weaknesses, tastes, styles, personalities, and backgrounds. Each character is different from the other, and massively so at that. If one looks at only the conflicting traits between any given relationship, then it seems crazy how they are even friends. In contrast, if one looks at the matching traits, they see perfect reasons why they are close, but may wonder why they are not closer (especially if one is looking through shipping goggles). It's only when one sees the whole picture, that they see why the Mane Six are the friends they are to each other, why they have their squabbles and disagreements, and why they always come back, settle their differences, and remain friends.

The same applies to real life, and it especially rings true for the shipping aspect of this fandom. Ships exist between all of the Mane Six, each character has been shipped with one of the five others at least once, with some ships simply being more popular than others. Every ship existing between members of the Mane Six can be argued convincingly, some may be more challenging than others such as RariDash and AppleSpark, but with enough examination a solid explanation can be made.

Similarly, the friendships between these ponies in the show can be justified. However, because friendships are not as 'heavy' as romantic relationships, they are simply much easier to explain.

I didn't even got to analyze other people's relationships, everything I know about love is from fiction. Man, I need a life.

It's true that Fluttershy would end up having problems keeping too much secrets, but Rarity's sexuality is something that would hardly come up in her daily life. That is, if we are still talking about her sexual orientation. We may have drifted into secrets in general at some point.

In the end, there's only one truth: any ship can work if it's well played. AJ can end up having foals with one of the bullies from Cloudsdale if a fic author knows what he is doing. For example, I'm working in a RariDash fic and I found a way to make the couple totally plausible.

Indeed, friendship can happen anywhere. I am very good in overlooking defects, and I can hang out with pretty much any kind of jerk. Now, if only Apple Bloom and Diamond Tiara could get along... It would be a dream coming true.

Alright,I've always been critical of shipping and overanalyzation because people will just grab at air for any couple. I mean some of the pairings I've seen pop up are just ludicrous. But if you like it ok,not gonna change me from changing my viewpoint. Although there are ships I do support. Such as pinkie/dash soarin/apple,even though I have rarely read fics dealing with the former.

I think we've gone a long way from just discussing the characters' possible sexualities, but that's all well and good, because we went over a few other topics and got some entertainment out of it.

And you're right, any ship can work if it's well played. That's precisely the point I'm trying to make, and it applies to real life, too. Only the approach tends to be different. Instead of a third-party pulling the strings and trying to justify two people being a couple, there is simply the couple being made, and then the two go about trying to explain why they like each other. The bottom line is that in real life, anybody and everybody can be friends or lovers, all it takes is an opportunity for a friendship to grow. In the realm of shipping in this fanbase, any and every ship can be justified if the character's involved have good reasons to like eachother - even if they simultaneously have reasons to argue (like most real life couples).

I'm not a fan fic writer, I have had ideas before, and I've started a small number of them, but most of them lose steam and become rambles or I just lose motivation. I've never thought about trying to write a shipfic, but that's because I don't trust myself to do it right. Instead, I've settled on attempting adventure-type stories and short tales, yet, as I've mentioned already, they've all got bogged down.

I'm determined to finish a Sweetie Belle fic though, because it just sounds too 'out there' to fail.

At Anon#8227, perhaps you're right, but it doesn't hurt anyone, and I see no problem with it. I find it interesting to discuss theories, interpretations, and just about anything relating to the show and the fanbase. The reason why shipping is the subject here is because the original topic is closely related to it.

I've already wrote 3 short fic (ranging from 500 to 2.5K words), but I won't consider myself a fan fic writer until I have a fic featured on EqD. I know what you mean by loosing motivation, I've been stuck at 4 from 5K words in the Raridash I'm writing for about one month (I blame Homestuck).

Well, old discussion is old, but I will give a word on it...

I actually only foucus on 4 shipping couples, FutterDash, OctaScratch, LyraBon and CheeriMac.

LyraBon and OctaScratch are both background ponies ships, there isn't much to talk about it, fandom got me hooked into then by accident.

CheeriMac... there was a whole episode about it in canon, there isn't much to say, I just see then both as straight.

FlutterDash, now... I actually ship this couple because it deeply mirrors my own life, I am a lot like Rainbow Dash, maybe I am just missing a bigger dream and, of course, wings, my gf is just Fluttershy with less animals, because of that, I see Dash being bi because I am bi, and Fluttershy as gay because my gf is gay, I do find it annoying to let my life cloud something as small as the judgment of a character's sexuality, but I can't do a thing about it...

Outside my ships, well... I never gave much thought about it, I actually thought of Pinkie as pretty much asexual, due to her rather innocent ideas of parting and stuff... until recently, where we saw her dancing inside a punch bowl while wearing a lampshade on her head in "Ponyville Confidential", as if she was drunk... her cryfull "It's all true!" didn't help either.

Rarity being closeted because she is afraid of what that will mean to her image only works if you assume Equestria got the same values regarding homosexuality as we do, with the lack of gay couples in "Hearts and Hooves Day" being just meta-censorship, all I can be sure is that she isn't lesbian, given the imaginary spots with Blueblood.

AJ... well, AJ is my least favorite Mane Six character and I honestly even forget she exists sometimes, so I never gave a thought about her sexuality, she gives me the vibe of being straight, maybe it is just her motherly behavior for most of the time, but that's all about it.

Twilight, well, she was the socially awkward one until very recently in-canon, and her awkwardness isn't completelly gone yet, while I do agree with her being bi-curious virgin, she might think she must learn more about "Friendship" before trying to get in an actual relationship with somepony.

Derpy... that's a delicated one for me, apart from the beggining of "The Last Roundup", she is as much of a background character as Lyra or Bon Bon, but given the part we saw of her canon personality and the fact fandom likes to paint her as Dinky's mother makes me think of a very ugly backstory for her, I don't even like to think about it... something along the lines of some random dicklish stallion tricks teen Derpy into sex, Derpy gets pregnant and the stallion skips town in the same night and is never seen again, or worse, teen Derpy is raped, and maybe beaten(which would explain her derped behavior, some minor brain damage), and ends up pregnant, Derpy decide to raise the foal and to be a loving mother, but is traumatised from the idea of sex forever... brrrrrrrrrrr, SEE WHY I DON'T LIKE TO THINK ABOUT IT? Stupid overactive imagination...

(to be fair, it can get worse... given Dinky is an Unicorn, it is safe to assume the father also was an Unicorn, now, don't the rape idea get even worse if you imagine being held down by a mostly unseen force while being raped, only to feel a strong blow in the head when your torment is finally over, and then be beaten to near-death, only to be left to die bleeding in an alley... okay, I am going to stop now, before I start crying...)
