Oh jeez, here we go again. As long as people don't start trying to claim this *public domain* song made famous by the best war movie ever made then I think I can still live on this Earth.

I like how the top comment just hints towards pony, but the bottom one is just PONY!

This fandom's lack of subtlety is why it is so annoying.

I'm all for the celebration of pony, but you can't force stuff on people like that. Not everyone loves pony.

I can't think of any fandom that is subtle.

^You don't very often hear of gardeners ramming their green thumbs into people's eyes.

Which says a lot when you remember how YouTube's comment-voting system works.

I marked hard when that song came on.

Mostly because it reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVPSIdI4L7g

I was really confused when this came on and everyone in the live stream was calling it Nazi music. Did I miss something?

Don't necessarily see this as forcing. I've seen this happen with other things and quite frankly they aren't subtle about it either.

@ChiefRampancy Hitler really liked Wagner's music. That is apparently enough for people to hate his songs. A similar thing happened to Nietsche's works being bastardized into Nazi propaganda and turning a symbol of good fortune into a symbol of hate.

On topic This kind of thing is annoying, but it happened before FIM and it will happen after. It isn't specific to this fandom.

^^ Wagner was Hitler's favorite composer. He listened to this particular piece a lot. After the war Wagner was rarely performed because people remembered Hitler's affinity for it.

The original sheet music may be public domain now, but there's a number of recent recordings, even the one used to make the Youtube video. According to copyright law, the recording is classified as a new work.

Even a copy of the original sheet music can be cpyrighted as it is a copy made available for public use. Same goes for the MIDI files. There's so many gray areas that would be exploited so that only one copy exists, and it would be for sale.

I wonder if they'd do that with the Linux kernel, which is a clone of the UNIX system. If Novell, the Unix owners, call an infringement claim on Linux... Yes, they probably can do so. I don't see anything protecting established currently accepted technology institutions founded on decades-old infringements.

Ugh, I need a drink...

I think we're all missing the real story here:

That guy's name is Wiener.

Just like clockwork. I'll bet no one here even has to go there to know that the comments will be full of "I SAW THIS ON APOCALIPS NAO!! THUMBS ME UP IF YOU LIKED THIS SONG BEFORE PONIES!!!1!111!"
I'm kinda wishing we hadn't invaded this song...

Classical/symphonic music is used and referenced all the time by cartoons. Much of my exposure as a young'un to the classics were from 90's cartoon soundtracks and in classic shorts such as "The Cat Concerto" (starring Tom & Jerry). That Wagner's most recognized work be used by MLP should come as neither a surprise nor breakthrough. In fact, "What's Opera Doc?" featured it long before even Apocalypse Now. ("Kill the wabbit!") But, hey, fans will be fans.

No, it's performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker. Wien=Vienna.
