Maybe... maybe Rainbow's trained for bursts of action, while Applejack (back legs aside) is more trained for feats of strength and stamina. Her back legs are like two rock-smashing pistons, but her forelegs don't get as much of a workout as them, while Rainbow trains for bursts of action, and does so with all of her six limbs.
In other words, she was more specially trained to be good in such a contest, but in a long haul or back-leg conpetition, she loses hands down. |

I call BS. YOU try getting on all fours and "bucking" a tree. Then you tell me which limbs you used to do it. Here's a hint (You have to push with your "forelegs" as much as you kick with your back, otherwise you just end up kicking yourself into the dirt.) |

Seriously, not only is Applejack supposed to be the most physically strong of the mane cast, but she's an earth pony, which are supposed to be physically stronger to begin with! |
