I mean absolutely no disrespect to the animators and artist of the show. They do a fantastic and marvelous job of creating some of the most life-like and expressive characters I've ever seen, and because of that, I thought maybe whipping up this little thing would help drive the point home better of what expressions look like when not completely drawn out properly. |
| HeinousActsZX #683853 8 months ago |
The ones on the right are much better, yeah.
I loved the song but the smiles did creep me out a bit., |
| RepentantAnon #683859 8 months ago |
the ones on the rigth still look off imo |
| Cgeta #683865 8 months ago |
I think they did that on purpose in this case. Every other time when they were smiling they did it right.
I think the "fake" smile is used because they are singing. Also they have their eyes wide open. It seems to have a higher priority than the smile. |

The song seemed a little... contrived... to me |
| SirSlush #683907 8 months ago |
Probably overcentralizing the show is where this image made me stop caring what it was even about. |
| Anonymous #683908 8 months ago |
@Cgeta: For what ever reason they used these expressions, it is unfortunately still incorrect. It's just not how smiles work. Like you said, it was a small mistake yes, but the whole reason I made this is because that little mistake can make a noticeable difference, especially when you compare to the fact that we've seen that the animators are highly adept at creating facial expressions. |
| dudemang #683925 8 months ago |
It may be "incorrect", but I liked the look it gave them. |
| Anonymous #683955 8 months ago |
Interesting. I noticed something was off when I saw those expresions in today's episode. |
| CallMeAl #683982 8 months ago |
I can see the difference, but it still looks weird to me. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing them from the front like that. Or maybe it's an actual change in the art style. I don't know. |

maybe they weren't trying to go for them smiling so they tried something inbetween? |
| Shader #684190 8 months ago |
I honestly thought through most of that song, that the two of them were creeping me the fuck out. |

Botox is a hell of a drug |
| MudPuppy #684361 8 months ago |
Huh, great analysis. But at the same time, I love it that they did it like this, at least for these scenes, because for some reason, it's incredibly hilarious and somehow weirdly adorable. |
| Anonymous #684440 8 months ago |
^ I agree. |
| Mattatatta #684459 8 months ago |
^^Same here |
| Anonymous #684484 8 months ago |
It still looks weird even with the eye scrunchy. The weirdest part about it is that despite being wide-open singing, she has no chin. |
| sellyme #684501 8 months ago |
I preferred it the way the animators did it. Far more cute! |
| Anonymous #684505 8 months ago |
why...do...you care? its just ...nvm |
| Anonymous #684656 8 months ago |
I heard the animators of season two are not the same ones of season one,, since Lesson Zero, those guys need more people like you. |
| Panzerpferd #685081 8 months ago |
They both look weird to me. They're just smiling way too big.
It looked weird when Pinkie Pie did it, too. |
| Anonymous #685235 8 months ago |
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed how incredibly "Uncanny Valley" those expressions were. |
| Anonymous #685245 8 months ago |
The originals are cuter. Your Dash looks like she has a moustache. |

You could have at least creditied where you got this comment from, or who wrote it.
It was posted by Seble in the comments of my ponibooru submission showing the funny faces (uploaded before this submission): http://ponibooru.413chan.net/post/view/87009 |

I think their smiles are just too wide. |
| Anonymous #685698 8 months ago |
I get an uncanny valley feeling from a lot of the ponies in first season too. Especially Scootaloo...her head is just too big or something. But it doesn't really bother me, it's just funny. |
| Anonymous #685832 8 months ago |
Looks a lot more natural.
It's weird, I don't remember ever seen any creepy faces like that in season one, wonder what happened. |
| DPV111 #685896 8 months ago |
They're equines. Their faces are not shaped like ours. |
| warden006 #686180 8 months ago |
Sorry but both are off
Its just about the size of their eyes, and the whole snouth thing Smiling like this with a muzzle is wrong in the first place already, it will be off no matter what you do |
| Anonymous #686205 8 months ago |
I liked the smiles actually... and yeah, in reality, since their mouth is protruded under the boney muzzle, (even in the cartoon's anatomy) there would me no tissue effect on the eyes. that made it off was the dimpling at the mouth, which represents a flat face. So yeah, considering the mouth design, the eyes should be effected, but the real flaw was in the mouth design. |
| okami6969 #687598 8 months ago |
I did notice this in this scene, but I think it was intentional. |
| fonypag #687664 8 months ago |
@684656
Oh dear Lord, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. |

It's almost never used for smiling in a 3/4 view or from the side, but bottom eyelid scrunch is used quite a bit for disgust or squeeattheadorablecritterface. If it's a cheek/muzzle scrunch, that makes more sense, but it's also used for a blatantly fake wide grin-smile by FS in the same song too as she tries to palm (pastern? frog?) off an unsuitable pet.
Top-right looks wrong to me. Top-left, maybe the muzzle could be more shaped and occlude the eye a little, but not like that. I actually like both bottom versions for different characters, Dashie more on the left since the elongated face helps in that frame, but Shy on the right (only a bit though, needs less heavy lines, more vertical, and shorter). Yes, it's a fake smile - or rather a performance smile. They're singing. IMO, the unusual angle in the duet shot helps contrast the characters eyes and styles better; after all you're seeing the most tomboyish vs. the most girlygirl designs in the mane six next to one another and harmonizing. And it is adorable. |

yep, bronies, check carefully the end credits of season one and season two, both of them are very different, the end credits of season two have no more "studio b animators" but just "top draw animators", no offence but those new animators are just making unnecessary changes. |

IT'S A SHOW FOR LITTLE GIRLS!!! |
