EVERYBODY PANIC!
seriously, it's like I hear of one of these end of free speech bills every month.

I get to the point where I have no clue if this is a previously proposed bill or a new one.

now, if someone can point me to a site that isn't mostly sensationalism, maybe I can figure out what is going on.

From what I understand, if the bill passes then sites like this that have copy-righted material will either have to get rid of them or be forced to shut down and/or face legal charges.

@ Adrian: No, this seems to be one of the same two main bills that has been "up in the air" for over a year now. But since they placed an actual date, it's not so much "Oh Lol, look at the movie industry BAWWWW" but more like "Wait....they're really serious? Fuck, really?"

All the internet protest really worried the industry, so they're trying to get this passed a.s.a.p. And even if they can't fit every nerd, tween, hard ass, or pirate in prison for five years, (Hell, we're way over crowded now), they can still sue as many people as they want for money no one but the rich still have.

There's no way this should pass. It's way too overreaching and too vague.

If this passes, it could mean the end of sites like YouTube, which means...no more ponies on YouTube!!!

@ mario - Exactly, it SHOULDN'T pass, but it's probably going to anyway.

quote from that wiki page: "The PROTECT IP Act is a re-write of the Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA), which failed to pass in 2010. A similar House version of the bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was introduced on October 26, 2011."

It's basically been an evolving threat for years that finally is ready to erupt like a volcano, killing everything we love in it's path.

I'm just hoping the shit will hit the fan before the United States falls too far.

Which isn't to say I won't fight the decline every step of the way, of course.

They made manufacturers install the blasted V-chip in televisions, do they really want that crap mandatory on Internet-accessible devices worldwide, too? Thousands of online ventures will tank if that happens.

Oh for fuck's sake. It amazes me how many otherwise intelligent people either DON'T READ IT or CAN'T FUCKING COMPREHEND WHAT THEY DO READ.

Short version for the tl;dr folks: Read Section 201 (Streaming of Copyrighted Works). That's what everypony's really flipping out over.

It does NOT making streaming a crime unless you do it for "commercial or financial gain", or if the "total retail value" (not "estimated value", not "value in the event I had sold tickets", etc etc) of what you're streaming exceeds $1,000 or if you released something before it was released by its own (such as the guys who broke into Skywalker Ranch to nab prequel stuff in the making).

Unless you're going to argue that your MLP video collection would have cost you more than a thousand bucks or if you're trying to cash in on your streaming, this does not affect us, nor does it affect even 98% of the streaming community at large.

Yes, but the over-all bill itself is loosely worded, so if they wanted to, they could simply say "Oh, we lost X amount of money because you streamed an episode of something for free that costs $2.99 on itunes each". Hell, i've seen a couple thousand enter the stream chatrooms when the new ep of MLP is on in the morning.

Maybe Hasbro might not be one of the companies that'll abuse the buck outta their power, considering most of the new Bronies are hooked into the fandom via youtube, and then run out an buy tons of merch. But still, if you enjoy anything else online that is media, music, tv, comics, manga, you could very well kiss it goodbye.
