I should probably read more into it, but from what I've seen in books and the like, the Civil War was basically fuckup after fuckup for both sides. However, although they fucked up at about the same rate, the South just couldn't shrug off their fuckups as easily as the North could, so their fuckups just kept adding on to each other until they were crushed under their large pile of fuckup they had amassed over the course of the war.

Again, I should probably read more into it.

And yet the South won in the long run, inasmuch as former slaves were systematically terrorized by Southern Whites, many of whom coerced slaves back into slavery. During the Reconstruction, blacks that stayed in the South often remained slaves in all but name. And attempts by federal troops to maintain order against bands of irate ex-Confederates led to a series of little wars all across the south that lasted for decades.
