My head canon was that Sparkler is in the Big Sisters program, but this comic changed my mind completely.

So.... Sparkler and Dinky have a timelord and an immortal for parents? And the unicorn bit is the confusing part?

I reject your fanon and substitute my own. Personally I like the Big Sisters Program route better. Simpler and not too convoluted

@#648509

That's not quite right, and saying things like that doesn't help. You see, what's typically being argued is believability, not how it could be worked to fit.

This is unbelievable and I like it for exactly that reason.

And that's the answer to the "drama", being perfectly fine with unbelievability in ones stories.

What I believe in relation to the canon isn't this, but I like it anyways. By far one of the better, if not best, of the unreasonable explanations if you ask me.

Damn! The time lord thing makes too much sense. Too bad the doctor isn't one to settle down, maybe he's different. The point remains that there will continue to be different theories on Derpy's family as the animators silently applaud themselves for this confusing injustice.

@#648525

You're going that route?

Ugh...

If you're going to try for the simple unconvoluted explanation don't half-ass it like you're doing.

People find that far more annoying then an intricately ridiculous explanation which honestly makes absolutely no sense in the setting.

It's the half-assing which attracts "Canon Nazis" more then anything.

I suppose that Ditzy got the Captain Jack treatment, then. As for the unicorn scenario, simple case of their biology adapting a recessive trait in their mother's genetic makeup as a way to magically filter out the chroniton particle residue from the DNA supplied by their parents' travels.

Why yes, I did just finish watching Doctor Who. How'd you guess?

@#648579

Well I'm glad you have better reasons then just because it's simpler and less convoluted. When there's an explanation simpler and even less convoluted then yours it becomes a less then perfect reason on its own.

@#648577

Are you copying me? It's a bit confusing if you don't go into what you're disagreeing with.

@#648592

...

And answering seriously to "How did you guess?" doesn't strike you as a joke in and of itself?

Eh, I'll assume it did unless you're referring to my comment on "science"perhaps?

About Sparkler being too old to be Derpy's daughter, look at Rarity's parents. They don't really look old at all and they have 2 daughters around the same ages as Sparkler and Dinky, maybe even older. They're proof that Derpy's family is completely plausible.

@supersaiyanmikito

Did you look at Rarity's mother?

She looks like Mrs. Cake! So yes, she does look older or at least not "young".

And Derpy was a contestant in the Best Young Flyers Competition.

^ We don't know what the cutoff age for "young" flyers is, though. It could be that Derpy was on the older side of the spectrum.

It's also possible that Derpy had Sparkler at a younger than average age.

@#648744

That's true. However I'm not sure we're necessarily on the same page of what we're debating.

You see, I mostly only debate what's most plausible as the "truth". While nothing 100% solidly says no as of now, signs do point that way.

I guess I could try to debate which implausible explanation I like best?

That seems rather pointless though, and I'd rather save it just in case I see an implausible explanation I really, really dislike.

I suppose I can ignore plausibility and work out how the genetics work in this case.

With Pinkie's family it's clear that pinkish colors are recessive. Both parents are carriers but do not display them, the end.

As for the horns?

No idea if they're dominant or not, we've yet to obtain solid evidence of a mixed couple with children. So let's go with the recessive carriers idea again and leave it there.

It's as plausible an explanation I could come up with if I ignored the implausibility of the whole situation.

My work is done.

Oh, and to add to that Rarity's mother is pink, yet neither of her children are. That's further evidence!

And neither do either of Twilight's parents have purplish coats... That may also be linked, though her mother does have purple highlights in her hair.

And that's how Sparkler's color could make perfect sense even if the situation that requires it doesn't.

My headcanon states that ponies have an "age plateau"--that is, through most of their lives they do not age physically at all. This also explains why we saw Lyra and Bonbon at Rarity's play.

"Big Sister Program" is plausible. This one is a perfect synthesis of the "Derpy as Doctor's Companion" and "Derpy as Dinky's Mother" notions, incorporating Sparkler.

Derpy's immortality reminded me instantly of this (altered) quote:

The lifetimers of most people were the classic shape that Death thought was right and proper for the task. They appeared to be large eggtimers, although, since the sands they measured were the living seconds of someone's life, all the eggs were in one basket.

Derpy's hourglass looked like something created by a glassblower who'd had the hiccups in a time machine. According to the amount of actual sand it contained - and Death was pretty good at making this kind of estimate - she should have died long ago. But strange curves and bends and extrusions of glass had developed over the years, and quite often the sand was flowing backwards, or diagonally. Clearly, Derpy had been hit with so much magic, had been thrust reluctantly through time and space so often that she'd nearly bumped into herself coming the other way, that the precise end of her life was now as hard to find as the starting point on a roll of really sticky transparent tape.

Makes sense to me!

>Derpy bangs Pony Doctor

Sparkler is born. This Doctor looked a lot like Sparkler and she takes after her dad, who was a unicorn in this incarnation. Then, sometime later Derpy bangs him again and has Dinky! Dinky's coat comes from Derpy but she gets her dad's unicorn horn.

Here's the other thing. Sparkler doesn't remember what her dad looked like when she was a kid as he was away most of her life. During this time the Doctor reincarnated and came back looking different. Ergo, Derpy and Sparkler are related and Doctor Whooves is a BOSS.
