Not bad, but I'd like to elaborate on this with some Personal Opinion.

1. Bittersweet/sad content is only good to those who enjoy it. I for one, cannot stand it, as I watch ponies to escape from the sadness of everyday life.

2. "Gore is fine if intriguing" I utterly disagree here. The entire point of the term "Gore" is that it is pornographic use of permanent physical damage. It cannot be intriguing, for it is too extreme.

If you find permanent physical/mental damage intriguing or enjoyable in any way, then you are a complete monster in my books.

Here's an idea, cut the grimdark completely. It's just repulsive, unoriginal, depressing and angering drivel spieled out graphically for pages and pages.

To elaborate with my own PoV.
1: I can agree with you here, but I tend to like bittersweet to a certain degree. As long as it ends well, I tend to be okay with it. It at least beats all the damn grimdark, gloomy and brooding stuff.
2: I personally didn't know it meant that. Not sure if OP did either... I just thought it meant "violence" pretty much. But yeah, those that honestly "enjoy" that sort of grimdark in a "serious" way, pretty much are very bad apples.

And I'd personally be all up for removing all the "bad" grimdark. As a fan of Fallout: Equestria I can't agree on cutting it completely, but that fic at least has story, explanation and isn't just fucking around.
