how about this?
Derpy adopted them both but sparkler was nearly old enough to leave home by then so she only lived with derpy a short time. Dinky however still lives with derpy but has her big sister visit for things like this. |

Doesn't everyone think that? Still my primary headcanon agrees with this picture. It's just the most probably answer. That doesn't mean I can't respect or enjoy other ideas, it just means I get annoyed when people overstate their probability in relation to this. It should be obvious which situation has the most evidence going for it, and if people just want to have fun in less probable directions they shouldn't have to or want to justify the probability at all. I also kind of like Roboshi's idea, it's appealing compared to some of the ideas I've seen thrown around. |

I still don't see why that episode has raised such a shitstorm. It was a SISTERS event, not a mother-daughter event. It doesn't confirm or refute anything about Derpy and Dinky. |

People know that. That has never been the argument and everyone has already taken that into account in theirs. Basically the fact that she was in the Young Flyers Competition is one of the major points here. The definition of "young" not likely being a term that refers to one capable of having a fully grown daughter. Because of this it becomes significantly less probable that Derpy and Dinky are related. That however has absolutely nothing to do with peoples right to create what they like. It just has to do with what should be perceived as closer to canon, which as I said shouldn't prevent people from telling whatever story they want to. |

I wouldn't consider Rarity's mother "Young" as in Best YOUNG Flyers young. But really, what's the problem here? It doesn't stop you from doing what you want, it just makes it seem a bit less true to canon. Does that matter? I'll enjoy what I enjoy no matter how close to canon I perceive it, and I imagine you will do the same. Anyhow, who is that supposed to be good enough for? |

There's a possibility that Dinky and Sparkler just have a common father. I wouldn't call it unlikely that it'd be socially acceptable for one absentee unicorn buck to sire several mares, what with hardly any guys around outside of military service. |

I'm willing to respect your headcanon so long as you don't look down at people who still prefer Derpy and Dinky to be mother and daughter. There is no canon for background characters, so if you want to view them as unrelated, that's absolutely fine (though I couldn't bear to stop believing in such a cute mother-daughter relationship). |
