It's not that difficult. At least for me.
My headcanon has always been that Ponies breed like Pokemon. No matter what type of pony pair up, the child will always be the same type as the mother. So I wasn't surprised to see Rarity's father an Earth pony. I mean, do the math. Diamonds = coal mines = cave = Earth element. I knew Rarity had some Earth pony elements in her genetics. This is also why I am not phazed by the Dinky =/= Derpy's daughter fiasco over here. I always thought Dinky was her niece if she was to be related to her at all. |

Rarity's father is a unicorn, but his horn was broken in half in an incident during his playing days. He hides his injury under his hat.
He was a great "hoofball" player as a young stallion, even attending Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns on an athletic scholarship. He went as far as to learn the game from Princess Celestia herself. The two met again as player and coach when he turned pro and was drafted by the Canterlot Solar Rays. Unfortunately, his career was cut short due to the aforementioned injury to his horn, and he was forced to retire. Refusing to quit the game altogether, he decided to become a coach. He wished to serve under his former mentor, but Princess Celestia insisted on managing her teams herself. He now coaches a small-market team in the easygoing Everfree League, bearing a slight grudge against the Princess along with his scar. |

Canon:
Pinkie Pie's parents: both earth ponies Twilight's parents: both unicorns My personal headcanon: Fluttershy's parents: one pegasus parent, one earth pony parent. They divorced, which is why Fluttershy had never seen the ground before despite having an earth pony parent. Rainbow Dash's parents: both pegasi. Girl's (Filly's?) got some serious flying genes in her DNA (if ponies have DNA, that is.) Pinkie Pie's grandparents: one pegasi, one earth pony. I like to think that Surprise (from G1, I think?) is either Pinkie's grandmother or her great-aunt (grandmother's sister). Applejack's parents: both earth ponies, as well as her grandparents on both sides. She's pretty much the definition of an "earth" pony. Rarity's parents: Earth pony father, unicorn mother. May be partially why she reacted so badly when called a mule by the Diamond Dogs, she feels a little inferior compared to other unicorns. |
