Equestria has a big sister program and Sparkler was assigned to be dinkies big sister. Its much more logical then derpy having 2 daughters. Its like a 5 year old thought up that idea. |

I agree with DandyMan - the idea of a mentoring program is incredibly touching. It makes Sparkler seem extremely kind and charitable, it suggests Dinky can be the Unicorn foal of a Pegasus parent and still get important things like training in magic, it teaches a solid Aesop about how not all families are the same, and it merges fanon and canon with minimal crowbar-ing. A far cry from "cheapening" their relationship, as I have heard some suggest about that idea.
Having them be blood sisters unrelated to Derpy only necessitates adding more background characters, anyway - their parents. |

My head canon: Sparkler and Derpy are old friends. Sparkler was younger and looked up to derpy as a big sister. At some point they got separated and years later Sparkler found Derpy in ponyville now with a daugther. Now Sparkler want to be to Dinky the great big sis Derpy was. That and that she is a gem cutter. |

^Tobias is correct. It seems that ponies remain "young" looking for almost their entire lives, and only change when they get to be quite old, like Granny Smith.
Even the Mayor, who is pretty clearly older than the mane 6, has no wrinkles on her face and the same face structure as Twilight. She only looks older because of her glasses and silver/grey mane, but for all we know that's always been her mane color. Other ponies have been shown with silver manes, too. So there's no reason why Derpy can't be a bit older than the rest of the cast. |

Little extra observation: Derpy was sitting next to Twilight when she first saw Princess Celestia raise the sun. Now, Twilight was a little filly, and Derpy was already a young adult. Apparently, our wall-eyed wonder ages really gracefully. |

Here is my headcanon (just made it up, I had not really given a shit about Dinky/Derpy 'till the drama arose):
Dinky and her sister were in an orphanage in Philydelphia. At some point the older sister was old enough to live on her own, got a job but her income and working hours did not allow her to claim custody of her minor sister. Dinky was anxious about it so she one day escaped the orphanage to find her big sis. Ofc she got lost and hungry and maybe had a head injury that caused her amnesia! DUN DUN TUN!. A mailpony found and adopted her and they stayed together for a while in Carrot Top's house until the child services (being heartless pricks as always) deemed Derpy mentally unfit for upbringing children and tried to take her away but Megatron went berzerk on their ass and they were forced to retreat. Then Dinky's sister was notified while Dinky's re-awakened trauma of child services' cruelty brought back her memory and then the sisters when soon again re-united. Dinky's sister moved in Ponyville and practices her job there and the household has enough income and mental capacity not to be touched by social workers. Then at the end of the episode a letter is send to the Princess and she turns all the social workers into stone and sends them bitches ON THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNN AND THEN THEY ALL FUCKED THE END |

It does make me wonder why of all things some fans would like to be sunk it had to be the Mother/Daughter relationship between Derpy and Dinky? I find that a bit on the harsh side when there are more pressing issues that would be better sunk, like Dash being a lesbian (which I like to believe she is because it would be nice to see a good lesbian character rather than the psycho-lesbian types that pop up everywhere). |

What is it about this aspect of fanon that you find irritating? So far, the reasons I have seen given are that the art and fanfiction centered around the pair are too sappy, that too many bronies hold them up on a pedestal, and that their different races and depictions in-show are canonically against the pairing. I like momma Derpy and daughter Dinky personally, but am just interested in others' opinions. |

@643593 - Let what go? It seems we're coming to like Sparkler as Dinky's older sister. That's the only thing we needed to adjust to. Derpy's relationship to Dinky seems to have stayed relatively intact. |
