To me, G4 is set in a somewhat altered G1 verse. There are too many similarities and throw-backs to it. |

Celestia and Luna are G1 ponies from a dark future who ascended to god status and then traveled back in time to the dawn of ponykind, erasing the events we know as G1 and creating the G4 universe. They managed to keep most of the evil (along with humans) from entering the world, but some of the same ponies exist (Twilight Sparkle's mom, for instance; Applejack even though she was born a generation later).
This means that Sea Ponies are out there somewhere. |
